in the same way that most phone games are initially free, but lock progression behind the choice of insanely inefficient grinding or buying success with with real money. its more profitable to gain new players with a "free" game, but once they've invested their time, make it so they won't get anywhere unless they start paying regularly. the new no trading between players allowed crafting system is copying hearthstone, magic and other online card games that are out to milk their players as much as they can. the ultimate strongest card will become your credit card.

im convinced this is the purpose of these changes. maybe it wont be immediately implemented and rolled out slowly steps at a time so its less of a shock, but im positive the goal the major changes is to make more money and this is the exact model of how it is done in the mobile gaming industry, there is no way around it.
