Deck Builders Gym - Develop your deck building skill on a level playing field! [Alternate Format]

I just created an imaginary league. This is kind of an offshoot of the Using Starting Cards, Theme Decks and Ladder Rewards to Build Decks thread.

The Deck Builders Gym

Exercise your deck building "muscles". The old saying "Practice makes perfect" applies to deck building as well. Now we're not expecting to achieve perfection but you won't get better if you don't practice.

The idea of this is that Trainers of all levels can see if they can build a deck with resources (cards) that everyone has or can easily get for free.

Everyone has equal access to the same cards and you don't have to make any trades to build a competitive deck(competitive within the custom formats).

With such an easily obtainable card pool the skill of the deck builder becomes the focus.

The first step for beginner deck builders is to see if they can build a deck better than a theme deck.

The formats deck requirements are:

Gym Basic Format

(Pocket Change Format)

Expanded Legal Decks

using the free starting cards (4 starting decks + 1VS Seeker)

(Born of Fire, Crushing Current, Hidden Depths & Mental Might)

and Cards available from the in game store Theme decks.

Gym Basic + Candy Format

(Penny Candy Format)

Same as Basic with the addition of Rare Candy.

Gym Basic + Ladder Format

(Top Shelf Format)

Same as Basic with the addition of the previous Ladder Reward Pokemon (2 copies)

Of course if you and an opponent agree you can add on whatever additional cards you want.

Decks are separated into classes(divisions/budgets) based on how many coins it would take to buy the cards.

This system gives us an Apples to Apples comparison of constructed decks and makes for a fair playing field.

"Penny Class" -0 Coins

"Penny Legacy" -0 Coins +1 copy of the free but no longer available deck Rallying Cry

5 Cent "Nickel Class" - 500 Coins  i.e. starting cards + 1 theme deck

10 Cent "Dime Class" - 1000 Coins i.e. starting cards + 2 theme decks

15 Cent "Five&Dime Class"- 1500 Coins - i.e. starting cards + 3 theme decks

20 Cent - "Double Dime Class"2000 Coins - i.e. starting cards + 4 theme decks

25 Cent "Quarter Class" -2500 Coins  i.e. starting cards + 5 theme decks

30 Cent -"Triple Dime Class" - 3000 Coins-  i.e. starting cards + 6 theme decks.  ----- I don't know if there is really any need to go higher than this but the progression is obvious.

Next if you can find someone that has built a deck of the same class you can "spar" in a friendly match.

Best out of three is probably a good idea in case of a bad shuffle.

Alternate formats offer no built in rewards so if you want this format to be rewarding you can make battles "prize fights" or add a "purse" to the match. Each participant can offer tradable items to go to the winner.

If you build a deck in any class, win a best of three and publicly post the results for review you can take a title

eg.

Deck Builder Penny Class Champion

Deck Builder Nickel Class Champion

Looks funny. Lots of thinking tho, and searching for what's in each deck to add or not. Far from thinking about the best available card possible.

I was going to ask but for the example, I think it's clear that Starting + 2 Theme (or more) can have repeated Theme in the count. Less funny, but more competitive.

I don't know if I'll have time for this but actually some non official formats exist around like Pauper, U150, Aceless or Region. The game have infinite possibilities.

I was thinking as the other thread is added to it would make these decks easier to build.

Plus PinkyPockyPanda's list of trainers available in theme decks would be quite helpful.

I did know about some unofficial formats organized by third parties but the main idea with these formats is very accessible to everyone and should be quite power balanced.

Of course for any real interest some kind of tournaments with prizes would have to be organized which is not something I personally would want to manage, that's why it's imaginary.

do we just create the deck or are we having a tournament too? if we going to have a tournament, I think reduce to just 1 league might be easier to have enough competitors.

At this point, there is nothing "set in stone". I'm not opposed to a tournament but I'm not sure how to go about organizing one or how to figure out prizes, etc. I did have an idea of each participant donating an uncommon chest and winner takes all. This could even work with only 2 participants. Pick a format and coin class and loser gives an uncommon chest to the winner...

The intention is that all participants would use decks in the same coin class. So whichever one gets the most interest..

Like it says in the first post, this is currently just imaginary. If there is enough interest and some kind of agreement regarding tournament type(single elimination?, round robin?, Swiss?) and prizes(would participation require a donation to the prize pool? How should prizes be distributed?)

I thought the currently imaginary League could have a format for decks using the previous ladder prize Pokemon. Eg. When the ladder resets, free cards + theme + 2 Zacian Vs.

Not sure what to call it.

Coupon Cutter Format?

Free Parking Format?

Casual player format? I know that’s not too creative but having the ladder card rewards shows you play enough but using a budget decks shows you don’t play a ton.

Ok, I've given some more thought to holding a tournament but I'm hoping some Trainers will be willing to help out with organizing and format decisions, etc.

I do not intend to participate in the first tournament as I'd like it geared at rookie trainers testing out their deck building skills.

Once some details are sorted out I will post something in the player vs player forum.

I started this in the deck construction forum because it is geared at deck building.

I have a Prism Star Ditto I will put up for the Prize pool.

To keep it fair and aimed at rookies the prize pool donation for entry will be an uncommon chest.

I think the prize pool should be divided up for the top 3 spots.

I don't think single elimination is a good test of skill so either round robin, swiss or something like that...

I'm not entirely sure how that works though so if anyone can help?

I suppose things like time zones will need to be considered.

  • Yeesterbunny changed the title to Deck Builders Gym - Practice your Deck Building and maybe "spar" with other Trainers

I've scrapped the league idea and "evolved" it into a gym battles concept.

Standard is very competitive and dominated by meta decks, Expanded is a bit of a wild west. This Gym idea is intended to provide a fair, power balanced and controlled environment where the competition is about developing your deck building skill.

A very nice idea and quite the challenge!

Because the Pocket Change Penny class format might be settled quite quickly given the unusually limited card pool, I thought why not give it a shot before someone else does. 😁

****** Deck List Generated by the Pokémon TCG Online www.pokemon.com/TCGO ******

The deck is based around using Gyarados' and Zapdos massive attacks while gaining as much benefit as possible from the damage counters they put on your Pokemon.

Zapdos' Raging Thunder attack deals a whopping 120 damage and OHKOs every Pokemon in the format bar Snorlax, which survives thanks to its ability, and places 4 damage counters on one of your Pokemon.

Next up, Gyarados. Its Berserk Splash deals 80 damage at least two-shotting everything in the format while dealing 10 damage to every benched Pokemon, which is great chip damage considering almost all Stage 1 Pokemon in the format have 90HP so you one-shot them later. Its Aqua Tail attack makes you throw a coin for each Water type energy attached and deals 90 damage plus an additional 30 damage for each heads. This means you only need two heads to one-shot the almighty Snorlax!

Now to the Pokemon which profit from having damage counters on them.

First up, Tauros. Its Seething Anger attack lets you flip a coin for each damage counter on it dealing 30 damage per heads which means the expected value at 10 damage counters is 150 damage making Tauros a good retaliator, as usual.

Seaking's Soaking Horn deals 10+80 damage if you healed it during your turn. Since we run every heal card in the format this happens quite reliably if you managed to get some damage on it. Surprise-killing a support Pokemon like Dodrio by gusting it is also quite handy.

Speaking of Dodrio, as there are no switch cards in the format we hope to evolve a Dodrio. Its Retreat Aid ability reduces your Active Pokemon's Retreat Cost by two Colorless helping with switching Pokemon like Gyarados without wasting as much energy.

Last but not least I put in Vulpix which can stall your opponent a bit in the beginning forcing them to switch out due to its Roar attack. You could also put in Snorlax which has a huge upside of only taking 10 damage from Zapdos Raging Thunder thanks to its ability reducing damage from attacks by 30 but I felt it might prove a liability with one-of Lysandre in the format, it's up to you.

In the Trainer card department we basically have almost all draw Supporters, all healing items, all "Balls" except for Great Ball and a bunch of useful stuff like Revive, Prof. Letter and the like. I didn't put in the Catcher but you can if you like. Lysandre + Vs. Seeker is pretty crazy for a format like this. Also prepare for N's of doom in this one-prizer format!

Energy-wise I might've put in one or two too many, I just did what felt fitting considering the draw engine but, of course, didn't playtest.

PS: It could be fun to eventually have tournaments in these classes when we came up with enough ideas.

PPS: I have another idea for the Penny class: "Legacy Penny" which would include one Rallying Cry deck.

That would be fun. Title matches for Class Champions.

I like it, that was a free deck when it was available so it still fits the premise. I added it to the Class list.

After seeing someone talking about the starting psychic deck I looked it up and found out the deck Mental Might is still given to new players as their first daily login gift. It's not usable for the Trainer challenge but it is cards that everyone should have so I will add it to the card pool.

@OelBoyYou may want to edit your deck list in light of this.

Oh, that's interesting news. We now have another Pokemon in Gallade which can't be OHKOed by Zapdos. Evosoda, more Potions, more Prof. Letters, Hard Charm. And Escape Ropes so you don't have to rely on Dodrio. This makes a lot of my considerations obsolete.

I'd still argues Zapdos/ Gyarados is a good deck but we'll have to see how it competes against Gallade. Eeveelutions aren't to scoff at either. I'll update my list soon. 👍

Given that Relentless Flame is considered one of the better decks in straight theme I figured it could be a contender in the Nickel-weight Division.

I ran a lean Pokemon count as the idea is to rely on the high ball count and our draw cards to get the pokemon out and evolved

Having a small pokemon count I opted to run a Brock's grit and a max revive to get pokemon back from the discard.

With Charizard's attack discarding energy Burning Energy is an obvious improvement.

Lots of energy search and retrieval since there is only 2 burning energy.

All available gust & pivot options

Kukui gives a damage boost and a bit of draw.

Skyla is there to search out a needed item when keeping hand cards is needed.

Town map so we can pick prizes if an important piece is prized.

weakness policy in case of water decks.

****** Deck List Generated by the Pokémon TCG Online www.pokemon.com/TCGO ******

The Theme decks used are 2x Furious Knights and 2x Blazing Volcano.

Furious Knights contains the notorious Devour Durant which discards a card from the top of your opponent's deck for each of your Durant in play. Unfortunately, there are only 3 Durants in the Theme deck so we have to buy it twice in order to use them effectively. On the upside, this provides us with 4x Super Rod and 4x N in total.

Buying Blazing Volcano twice gives us 4x Nest Ball, 4x Rescue Stretcher, 2x Guzma and 4x Pokemon Fan Club in total. I tried keeping the class as low as possible as to avoid facing decks which run too smoothly. Milling essential cards from unsuspecting decks which are unable to effectively retrieve their key pieces from the discard pile can shut down many matchups. You could try to use only one copy of Blazing Volcano to be in a lower class. Without any it will be close to impossible to use Durant reliably because you would be left with only a Revive, a Max Revive and 4x Super Rod. Also you wouldn't have any Nest Balls.

Regarding bad matchups, both Charizards will be tough to beat. You will have to get lucky and mill their Welders and hopefully Charmeleons, Charizards and Brock's Grits. Otherwise, even with the one Weakness Policy attached, they will absolutely run havoc on your Durants.

Anything else Fire type or with a 70+ attack will have also have a good time against you if you can't hinder them with Guzmas.

Another thing to consider is that there are no prize card manipulating effects in any Theme decks. The Town Map the game provides you with is of no use if you don't plan on taking any price cards. Having one Durant prized will make for a tough battle. Having two or more prized is pretty much game over.
