From the list we can build a generic template that we can add to for building decks:

Since this is based only on the free starting decks and cards this is a very bare template and I have to say a few things or they'll revoke my deck builder's license😉.

If you ever want to use Stage 2 Pokemon GET 4 RARE CANDY

If you ever want to build expanded decks GET 3 MORE VS SEEKER

If you can, GET AN ACE SPEC -Computer Search & Dowsing Machine are the top picks.

(Yes ACE SPEC can be expensive but they are very strong cards)

You can copy this list and import it in the deck manager. Give it a name to make it easy to find

(eg. AAA EXP Template)

Then, you can clone it and use the copy as a starting point to build your first deck.

As you get better cards and develop a playstyle you can edit the template to suit your needs.

* 2 Professor Sycamore BKP 107
* 1 Lysandre AOR 78
* 2 N FCO 105
* 2 Skyla BCR 149
* 1 Fisherman CES 130

* 4 Level Ball BST 129
* 2 Ultra Ball SUM 135

* 1 Evosoda XY 116

* 3 Professor's Letter BKT 146

* 2 Energy Retrieval PRC 126

* 1 Hard Charm XY 119

* 2 Lucky Helmet AOR 77
* 1 Exp. Share SUM 118
* 1 VS Seeker PHF 109
* 1 Revive ROS 88
* 2 Switch SUM 132
* 1 Town Map BKT 150
* 1 Pokémon Catcher SSH 175

##Energy

8-10 basic energy as needed

2-4 special energy as needed

If you are interested in STANDARD format then your starting template will be even skimpier...

Next you should have purchased a theme deck with coins earned during the Trainer's Challenge. In order to make a reasonable deck we will usually require 2 copies of the same theme deck because they only put 2 copies of the main cards in them 🤨

I will use the Charizard Theme deck for the first deck recipe. The list is based only on free + theme decks but there are some recommended upgrades:

Rare Candy - Since Charizard is a stage 2 Pokemon 4 Rare Candy would greatly improve this deck. 4-2-4 Charizard + 4 rare candy

Professor's Letter - You have only 1 from the initial free stuff but more would be better. 2-4 can replace Sonia

VS Seeker - This is a staple card in expanded. Try to get 3 more

Lysandre or Boss's Order - another Lysandre would be good but Boss's Order is slightly better because it's legal in standard format

Welder - Can be found in Battle Mind theme deck

Fire Crystal - better than energy retrieval (for fire decks)

Free Cards + 2 Charizard Theme decks = 1000 COIN DECK

##Pokémon - 16

* 2 pokemon with Call for Family?
* 2 Sudowoodo SSH 100 <-- draw 2 attack could be useful early

* 4 Charmander VIV 23
* 4 Charmeleon VIV 24
* 4 Charizard VIV 25

##Trainer Cards - 30

* 4 Professor's Research SSH 178 <---excellent draw card

* 2 N FCO 105

* 1 Lysandre FLF 90

* 4 Leon VIV 154 <--- this Charizard does increased damage with Leon in the discard so we want 4 copies

* 2 Sonia RCL 167

* 3 Energy Retrieval SUM 116
* 1 VS Seeker PHF 109
* 2 Level Ball NXD 89
* 2 Ultra Ball SUM 135
* 2 Evolution Incense SSH 163
* 1 Professor's Letter BKT 146
* 2 Ordinary Rod SSH 171
* 3 Switch SSH 183

  1 Scorched Earth  <---may as well add the free fire stadium

##Energy - 14 <---This particular Charizard only needs 2 for attack so this could probably lowered to 10-12

* 14 Fire Energy SWSHEnergy 2

Total Cards - 60

Here is a 1500 COIN version (free + 2 Charizard themes + 1 Battle mind)  Rare Candy is included in this list - look further down the thread if you don't have any.

Spoiler

##Pokémon - 14

* 2 Salandit UNB 30

* 2 Salazzle UNB 31

* 4 Charmander VIV 23
* 2 Charmeleon VIV 24
* 4 Charizard VIV 25

##Trainer Cards - 34

* 2 Ultra Ball DEX 102

* 2 Great Ball SSH 164
* 2 Level Ball NXD 89

* 2 Evolution Incense SSH 163

* 4 Rare Candy SUM 129
* 2 Ordinary Rod SSH 171

* 4 Leon VIV 154

* 2 Welder UNB 189
* 1 Lysandre FLF 90

* 4 Professor's Research SSH 178

* 2 N FCO 105

* 1 VS Seeker PHF 109

* 2 Exp. Share NXD 87
* 1 Professor's Letter XY 123
* 2 Switch SSH 183

As of this posting there is Zacian V available on the ladder.

If we buy 2 metal theme decks (Zacian or Zamazenta) we will get these cards:

* 4 Great Ball SSH 164
* 4 Metal Saucer SSH 170 <----This is the main thing we want for a Zacian V deck (good for just about any metal deck though)
* 4 Poké Kid SSH 173
* 4 Pokémon Catcher SSH 175
* 4 Professor's Research SSH 178
* 4 Sonia RCL 167
* 4 Switch SSH 183

Free cards + 2 Zacian V from ladder rewards + 2 theme decks = 1000 COINS

This would really only give us a skeleton of a deck that would need some flushing out to work.

Plenty of recommended upgrades to this deck. see PinkyPockyPanda's  Zacian V Tactics

If you were able to pick up Lucario & Melmetal from a past ladder that would be a great fit for a Zacian V deck

Dedenne-GX was on a past ladder as well and can be good draw support.

Metal goggles would be a good addition

Max Elixir can help with energy acceleration

(Incomplete deck list below - it's a starting point - some things should be replaced with better options, some could be removed entirely)

##Pokémon -  6  (definitely want to add more pokemon to make this a workable deck but not much worth using in the theme decks)

* 4  Hawlucha RCL 148  <----from Zacian theme, Windfall: shuffle your hand into your deck and draw 5

* 2 Zacian V SSH 138

##Trainer Cards - 32

More balls is recommended (ultra, quick, nest)

* 2 Ultra Ball SUM 135  <---discard 2 cards (use energy in this deck) to pull out any pokemon

  2 Ether <--weak try for energy acceleration

* 4 Metal Saucer *******  <---put discarded energy on your benched pokemon

* 1 Professor's Letter BKT 146

* 2 Exp. Share SUM 118

* 4 Professor's Research SSH 178

* 2 Skyla <--- get any trainer - for when you don't want to use professor's research because you need some card in hand

* 2 Sonia RCL 167 <--get 2 energy or 2 basics - not horrible but can be replaced by more item cards (professor's letters, balls)

* 2 N FCO 105

* 1 VS Seeker PHF 109

* 4 Switch SSH 183 <---- since Zacian can't attack after using Brave Blade we want to be able to switch him out

* 4 Pokémon Catcher SSH 175

* 1 Lysandre AOR 78

* 1 Weakness Policy BUS 126

##Energy - 12 There are some metal special energies you might want to swap in

* 12 Metal Energy

Relentless Flame Theme Deck

(The other Charizard deck)

Numbers here are useful cards from a single copy of the deck.

Spoiler

* 3 Farfetch'd TEU 127 <---draw 2 cards & toolbuster  for 1 energy can be useful

* 3 Charmander TEU 12

* 2 Charmeleon TEU 13

* 2 Charizard TEU 14 <-- self energizing but costs HP

* 3 Nidoran♀ TEU 54 <--weak call for family
* 2 Nidorina TEU 55
* 2 Nidoqueen TEU 56  <---Queen's call ability can be quite useful (great in a psychic evolution challenge deck)

##Trainer Cards - 18

* 2 Brock's Grit TEU 135 <--not terrible but there are items that replace him.
* 2 Copycat CES 127 <--very situational card
* 2 Cynthia UPR 119 <-- good draw for people who just can't bring themselves to discard their hand

* 2 Nest Ball SUM 123 <-- search basics and put them right on the bench
* 2 Pokémon Fan Club UPR 133 <-- getting 2 basics to your hand probably not worth playing your 1 supporter per turn
* 2 Professor Kukui SUM 128 <--increase damage and draw 2 cards is not bad
* 2 Switch CES 147
* 2 Timer Ball SUM 134 <--coin flips should usually be avoided but if you have no better evolution search options..

If we bought 2 copies and combined it with our free cards, that's 1000 COINS to get something that could look like this:

Just a sample idea list, could definitely be improved.

Spoiler

##Pokémon - 12

* 4 Charmander TEU 11
* 4 Charmeleon TEU 13
* 4 Charizard TEU 14

##Trainer Cards - 34

* 2 Professor Sycamore BKP 107
* 4 Switch SSH 183

   1 nest ball

* 1 Professor's Letter BKT 146
* 3 Cynthia UPR 119
* 1 Town Map BKT 150
* 1 Scorched Earth FCO 110
* 3 Professor Kukui SUM 128
* 2 Brock's Grit TEU 135

##Energy - 14

* 2 Burning Energy BKT 151
* 12 Fire Energy Energy 2

Total Cards - 60

Recommended Upgrades would be:

Rare Candy!  If you use Stage 2 Pokemon you should use 4 rare candy in your deck 4-2-4 Charizard line + 4 rare candy

Evolution incense - much better than timer balls Drednaw theme deck contains 1 copy

We could throw in our free Max Potion to use on Charizard after he's already discarded all his energy...

Energy Recycler and Rescue Stretchers(Mach Strike, Hidden Moon, Steel Sun each have 1 copy) could replace Brock's Grit

Dedenne-GX if you have it, or got it off the ladder

You could add Reshizard (Past ladder prize - but deck should be built around it)

Welder - 2 copies in Battle Mind

Fire Crystal

You can’t use the code rallying cry anymore. I tried it since I don’t have the deck, and it didn’t work. I think it ended in 2019 or something when I searched online for if it still works.

Ok, try one of these:

BWPlasmaBlast

PrimalClash

PhantomForces

FuriousFists

FlashFire

PlasmaStorm

BoundariesCrossed

PokemonXY

I redeemed some code to get Rallying Cry on my son's account not that long ago.

Ok, here's free cards + 2 copies of Mach Strike Theme deck sample list. Could be better

Once again rare candy would improve this deck 4-2-4 Garchomp line + 4 rare candy would be better

2 more Double colorless energy would be better. or 4 double dragon energy

VS Seeker is a great card for this deck with the Cynthia synergy being so important so 3 more would be good.

I have a post last year about this..(ur list is a bit more organized) identifying a bunch of mvp good pokemon and trainers all available in theme decks... for expanded there is tons... also I wanted to mention you completely skipped out on wishful baton, the baton is a far better card than exp share... you can take all 3 energy and transfer to another pokemon, exp share only gets you one.

And for fire you can make real strong expanded fire deck with theme deck volcanion, theme deck entei, battle mind for 4 welders, and charizard from relentless flames... add few blacksmith from theme deck brilliant thunder. One of my first decks i made and still remains one of my strongest decks. Roller skates (again from older theme decks) for more draw. Use professor letters to get more fire energy.. use wishful baton to keep the energy into play or transfer to charizard for 330 damage in single turn) I regularly took down expanded tournament events with it and still do. (Mine added a victini V too which is quite good). Since then it is a bit upgraded with giant hearth and float stones but the main parts still does all the work.

I'd like to help this list.. what would u like me to do? A whole lot of good cards are really right there in theme decks.

Any help would be great!  I was thinking of showing or listing which good cards are in theme decks by deck name.  Deck lists should say how many of which decks would be needed to make it and what things should be added that are not found in theme decks to improve it. Trying to keep things budget and kind of focused towards newer players.

Thanks.

RARE CANDY

How to Get It

Instead of telling you over and over that you should have rare candy if you're using Stage 2 pokemon, I'm going to tell you how to get it.

Despite the name, rare candy is only an uncommon card. It appears in 8 different sets and thus there should be a lot of it around for trade.

"But I don't anything to trade!" you say,  "I'm just starting out, I'm a poor starving Deck Builder."

Well you have a theme deck right? At worst you have the 3 starting theme decks.

You can easily collect 4 tickets and enter a theme deck tournament.

Even if you lose right away you'll receive a tradable chest.

You can then create a public trade offering the chest for however many rare candy you need, or you can go into the In-Game Item Exchange Forum and make an offer there.

Rillaboom Theme Deck

A single copy of this deck provides a pretty good assortment of usable cards.

Spoiler

* 3 Gossifleur SSH 20  <--Best Call for Family available: 3 Basics

* 2 Eldegoss SSH 21 <--Accelerate 3 Grass energy

* 2 Maractus SSH 7 <--Has high damage potential but requires coin flips

* 3 Grookey SSH 11
* 3 Thwackey SSH 13
* 2 Rillaboom SSH 15

Trainer Cards

* 3 Professor's Research SSH 178

* 2 Poké Kid SSH 173 <--probably not worth using if you have the right items in your deck

* 1 Pokémon Center Lady SSH 176 <-- Ok for dealing with multiple special conditions

* 4 Great Ball SSH 164
* 1 Ordinary Rod SSH 171
* 1 Pokégear 3.0 SSH 174
* 2 Switch SSH 183

With the free cards + 2 copies you could build a mediocre Maractus Deck

Here's a start:

4-4 Eldegoss

4 Maractus

4 Professor's Research

2 N

1 Lysandre

2 Skyla

1 Fisherman

1 VS Seeker

4 Switch

 4 Great Ball

 4 Level Ball
 2 Ultra Ball

1 Professor's Letter

 2 Energy Retrieval

1 Exp. Share

* 2 Lucky Helmet AOR 77

* 1 Max Revive
* 1 Town Map BKT 150
* 1 Pokémon Catcher SSH 175

14 Grass Energy

Rillaboom is also an option if we add rare candy

2-2 Eldegoss

4-2-4 Rillaboom

4 Rare Candy

The rest would look very similar to the Maractus list above

When you start adding the contents of 4 Theme Decks together you can get decent results

If we combine 4 Welder and 2-2 Salazzle (as support) -(2 Battle Mind) with 2 of either Charizard Deck we can make a deck you could probably grind the ladder with.

Similar to what I did last year essentially. I will try to keep it more organized though. Sorry for the late reply, I been having some health scares recently....

Sure, maybe you could dig out your old post and organize it to save a bit of work?

No worries,  hope things work out well

Here is the post from when I made it last June

I been meaning to do this for quite some time. I have 3 pages full of it in my notebooks. These are pieces that can be moderately (sometimes even surprisingly very) competitive that you can find directly in the theme decks. My collection has grown since I was originally going to try and build many decks with theme decks, but I still have tons of ideas in more pages of my notebook. Instead of giving the full synergy of all of those ideas (as I want y'all to get creative in your own configurations) I'm going to list parts and pieces I feel have quite alot of potential to be mixed in with some GX cards, tag teams, vmax to build a very viable rogue deck in formats. (That will be future postings) I list the deck and the parts in the deck that can be useful to take parts of it and put with other things. Maybe some of you think this is dumb, but there are some underrated cards in here ladies and gentlemen, underrated. Hopefully this can help newbies in particular who don't know "where to start" when it comes to try making their own decks that are better than theme decks, but don't have the money yet to buy cards and build the exact decks from limitless and other sites. These may also help people decide "what theme deck should i get next". I put a question mark on the pokemon that are iffy since I have ideas for them too, but in my mind slightly less moderately competitively viable. So if it doesn't have a question mark I have defined usages for them or have already built a moderately competitive rogue deck with them included inside it.

I'm going to go deck by deck... I use a question mark if it's a maybe has potential, if no question mark I know they are useful cards.

MVP's: (if already MVP in standard it is also MVP in expanded) When I say "MVP" I mean pretty severe potential to be a key piece in a rogue deck.

Oricorio "vital dance", Lucario, Alolan Ninetales, Lunala, Shinotiic, Servine, Hoopa, Delphox, Hypno, Slowking, Zoroark "mind jack", Gengar, Vileplume, Pyroar "Flare Command", Eevee "energy evolution", Milotic "Energy Grace", Blastoise "Deluge", Suicune, Vanillaluxe, Electrode "Magnetic Draw", Weezing, Gabite "dragon call",  Reshiram, Eelectrik "dynamotor", Durant, Double Dragon Energy, Guzma, Blacksmith, Superior Energy Retrieval, Nest Ball, Pokemon Communication, Field Blower, Rescue Stretcher, Wishful Baton, Professor's Letter, Professor Sycamore/Juniper, Professor Birch's Observations, Colorless, Eviolite, N, Trick Coin, Acerola

Lots of noobs might be losing when they build a deck because they should be using the MVP cards not most of the super weak cards placed together in the theme decks, but you can combine pieces and parts together. There are indeed lots of weak cards in the theme decks, but as I pointed out there are quite a few hidden nuggets and mvp's who can do some special stuff and especially if you combine them with current cards in the new set and gx/tags/vmax (scoop up net comes to mind with oricorio and other cards) Any questions on why I picked some of them I can elaborate on a specific decklist build ideas that I have done or plan to do...Hopefully this gives some deck build ideas for those who don't have "the best cards" yet... ********************************************************************** maybe I missed a few good cards? There is some value in these cards that many have/are mistakenly forgetting about in the theme decks especially what I listed as MVP's. Ultimately these are just my opinions on what I believe to be sneaky good, but I have put quite a few decks together too (70+)... What are your thoughts? Go nuts, be nice as some others say...

Here is another Template with cards you can start with and can get from theme decks.

This is a subtractive Template (It has too many trainers, remove what you don't have or is not needed in the deck you're building)

This time we have ADP (Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX) as a ladder reward. There are a fair number of ADP decks but combined with the previous ladder's Zacian V's we have the makings of the infamous ADPZ.

Here is a (standard) skeleton made of theme deck and ladder prizes...

Spoiler

2 Zacian V SSH 138
2 Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX CEC 156
2 Dedenne-GX UNB 57

4 Professor's Research SSH 178
1 Guzma & Hala CEC 193
4 Metal Saucer SSH 170
4 Switch SSH 183

However, if we are building decks based off free & theme deck cards we should be looking at expanded. Here is some (free & theme) cards to add to the standard skeleton list for an expanded version

Spoiler

1 Lysandre AOR 78
* 2 N FCO 105
* 2 Skyla BCR 149
* 1 Fisherman CES 130

* 2 Ultra Ball SUM 135

* 3 Professor's Letter BKT 146

* 2 Energy Retrieval PRC 126

 Weakness policy<--in case of fire

* 2 wishful baton
* 1 VS Seeker PHF 109
* 1 Town Map BKT 150
* 1 Pokémon Catcher SSH 175

  • 1 month later...

This is the best thread for new and returning players!

Since I made the budget meta deck of Garchomp-Altaria back in 2013, which I am now trying to perfect as a legacy deck, it's awesome and kinda funny to see Garchomp is still a great budget choice!

So I am thinking of transitioning slowly to Expanded, getting 2x Mach Strike. The Garchomp - Lucario - Synthia synergy seems amazing. Can I use my Dragon Call Gabites in this or are they soon going to go out of rotation?

And another question, Fighting Garchomp is a better choice I've read somewhere. Is this the one @guruguy87 mentioned from Towering Heights or is there a newer/better one?

If it is, that's way more budget friendly than Gar-taria back in the day (as you had to buy a lot of boosters to grab/trade all those garchomps and altarias, not to mention most trainer cards)

So the current ladder reward is Zamazenta V.

Some quick notes:

In my opinion Zamazenta V is best as a secondary/backup attacker to stall against VMaxes. 130 damage is just not enough in the current Meta. The discard special energy effect has a bit of potential with special energy being fairly common.

Not much help from theme decks for this one other than metal saucers & the usual staple cards.

If we look to the past few ladders Lucario Melmetal (Tag team) is a good partner for Zamazenta with the GX attack knocking off your opponents energy and increasing damage reduction.

Zamazenta would also fit in with the Zacians from a past ladder and a copy or 2 could be dropped into an ADP deck as well....

If we try for an energy disruption deck using Zamazenta we likely have to stray from theme decks and starting cards for an effective build.

Team Flare Grunt was the full art supporter reward on a past ladder which would be a good addition.

Crushing Hammers of course (IIRC they are not available in theme decks though).

Team Skull Grunt is another helpful card for energy disruption.

Marnie helps to.
