[CARD] Swellow "keeps" ability after go and back to bench. Bug or not?

Recommended Posts

Chasista

Is this a bug?

I was playing Theme and battled against SUM Steel sun Theme with my Blazing volcano.

At a certain moment of the game Swellow (GRI 104) https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/pokemon-cards/sm-series/sm2/104/ used Agility. In my turn I used Guzma to move Swellow to bench and KO a different pokémon.

Opponent's next turn, Swellow was chosen the Active and used Swallow dive: 40+ If this Pokémon used Agility during your last turn, this attack does 80 more damage. And did 120dmg.

Ok, Swellow used Agility the past turn but went to bench and back. This use to reset the effects of attacks. When you check that up green arrows appearing (or red down) to remark how is affected a player or a pokémon, Swellow had a green arrow saying the "Swallow dive attack does more damage", and I think the effect activate itself when the opponent's turn started but, it doesn't count as a "different" pokémon when a pokémon goes to bench (and back)?

Could this happen because of starting the turn as Active again and not being in bench? Does opponent turn starts after choosing a new Active? (lines 108-109-110).

Would have Swellow lost the effect if had remained in bench at the start of the turn, and then promoted to active via Retreat or Switch of a different pokémon?

Is this ability working as intended?

Log until the issue, line 93 in advance.

Hello @Chasista

I'm sorry to hear there seems to be an issue with Swellow.

Thank you for posting the game log for this. Let's now wait and see what the development team determines.

This is working as intended based on the wording of Swallow Dive.

Quote

Swellow (GRI #104)

{C} Agility: 20
Flip a coin. If heads, prevent all effects of attacks, including damage, done to this Pokémon during your opponent's next turn.

{C} Swallow Dive: 40+
If this Pokémon used Agility during your last turn, this attack does 80 more damage.

And for comparison's sake...

Quote

Clawitzer (FLI #26)

{W} Standing By
During your next turn, this Pokémon’s Sharpshooting attack does 120 damage instead of 40.

{W} Sharpshooting
This attack does 40 damage to 1 of your opponent’s Pokémon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.)

Standing By puts an effect on Clawitzer that increases the damage done by its Sharpshooting attack on your next turn, so moving it to the Bench will clear the effect.

Agility doesn't place an effect on Swellow that increases the damage done by its Swallow Dive attack on your next turn; Swallow Dive makes a game state check to see if the Agility attack was used on your previous turn by the same Swellow card that's currently attacking.

So it would have work even if Swellow would started the turn in bench and ended attacking as active, as long as it's the same Swellow. Pokémon becomes more complicate daily 😂

Awesome, thank you for so clear explanation @TPCi_Mathis  ☺️
