Bug with interaction between Altered Creation prize buff, and Miraculous Shine devolution KO

Recommended Posts

DenDen128

Today while playing a game I noticed an unexpected interaction between Altered Creation, the GX attack of Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX; when I KO'd an Eevee by devolving an Espeon-GX that had 13 damage counters on it, with my Marshadow-GX using the Miraculous Shine attack provided by an Espeon-EX in my discard. When Eevee was KO'd I did not take 1+1 prize cards, rather only 1, as if Altered Creation prize buff was not in effect. Which it was, as you can see from the game log, where later in the game I KO'd a Nihilego-GX and took 3 prizes to win.

This is a complex game state to reproduce. The gremlin is presumably in the explicit math/coding to handle KOs by involuntary devolution. I suspect when the programmers coded that, they "hardcoded" the prize resolution to look ONLY at the prize value of the previous evolution that is KO'd by the devolution. Thus, it is ignoring the ADP buff now. We should fix that. There are other ways to devolve or be devolved, and note that only KO's caused by damage (and more specifically, opponent attacks) should trigger ADP's buff. Not, for example, damage from counter placement or other self-induced damaging effects.

In this case, I feel strongly I should have received the +1 card buff because Eevee was KO'd by damage from my attacks. That said, I wonder if the gremlin could be caused/confounded by the fact that SOME of the damage counters on Eveee/Espeon at the moment of KO pre-dated the Altered Creation attack-effect? It does say "for the rest of the game" and "damage from those attacks" in the card text... so I wonder if perhaps the prize buff is (rightly or wrongly) trying to ignore damage counters that pre-date the GX attack? That would be way too complicated for humans to manage IRL, but perhaps the game is doing that online?

Thoughts?

Am I missing something obvious? Wouldn't be the first time. Ha!

Ha!

I would guess that it is considered that the damage did not come from one of your Pokémons' attacks, as it was already on the opponent's Pokémon when the attack occurred.

Perhaps. And yet, the Eevee was literally KO'd by damage (counters) resulting from my attacks. The operative question becomes what did the game designers actually mean when they wrote the ADP prize buff card text. Did they mean either:

A ) Have MORE fun! For the rest of the game (buff your attack damage +30 and) take an extra prize card, when you KO a Pokemon via your attacks, but NOT if the KO is caused in other ways (i.e conditions, abilities, trainer cards, or self-damage by your opponent's attacks and trainer cards etc).

That's super straightforward. Only your attacks.

In which case pre-existing damage counters from pre-GX-attack attacks ought to trigger the later KO prize bonus, regardless of when the damage counters got there, because the KO is caused by the Miraculous Shine attack in the present tense. It is the Miraculous Shine attack that was buffed, not the earlier attack(s) which placed the counters on over multiple turns. (Similarly, the Miraculous shine attack ought to be buffed from 0 damage to 30 damage, right, by Altered Creation. Right?) And in this case it totally doesn't matter when and why or how the fatal damage counters were placed. Just that they cause the KO during the resolution of the Miraculous Shine attack by the active Pokemon, which is governed by the card text "for the rest of the game" regardless of whether new damage or old damage is co-mingled on the KO'd Pokemon, and regardless of which specific counter KO'd the devolved active. (How would we even know, beyond comparing total damage with HP?)

OR, did the game designers mean something else, like:

B ) Have LESS fun! For the rest of the game (buff your attack damage +30 and) take an extra prize card, when you KO a Pokemon via your attacks, unless the KO'd Pokemon happened to have any pre-existing damage counters on it, from before you used ADP's GX attack... because in that case you need to manually track those for the rest of the game... differently than any new damage counters placed after you used ADP's GX attack... for each of your Opponent's Pokemon... and remember to refer to and update that calculation each turn... and retroactively ignore pre-existing damage counters on a KO'd Pokemon when you want to claim the bonus prize card... to which you merely think (but can now never know for sure) you're entitled to because you used ADP's GX attack... because the game designers want it to be super-complicated, not super-simple, even though they didn't write any of this on the card text... but warning, if you fail to follow the unwritten rules and dare argue about whether you deserve an extra prize card with your Opponent, and/or the Judge, because nobody will ever remember the precise game state or damage counter totals per Pokemon in play, from 17 minutes ago or whatever... if you waste too time arguing or disagree with the judge then you may be DQd.

They can't possibly expect humans to play that way. Humans don't play that (B) way.

From which I intuit the computer game is not adequately replicating the way humans play the game IRL, which is also the way the designers intended the card to work. Except not online, as currently implemented.

Of course I realize this is an edge case. That's why I think it's a bug not a feature, as implemented. Because the interaction between multiple cards was hard to forsee, and the other card (Espeon-GX devolution attack Miraculous Shine) already manipulates prize-card taking-- to put the highest evolution card aside temporarily while resolving the KO and prize-taking of the previous evolution, which in this case (Espeon-GX, Eevee) saves one prize card lost. ADP Altered Creation in a sense removes the downside of KO's via devolution, by restoring the "natural" prize card risk/reward. It's 2-1+1 = 2.

My guess is that, as coded, 2-1+1 does not equal 2, in Pokemon TCGO.

Can we find out from the devs if this is intentional, or an oversight?

There's nothing so complex as your scenarios involved. The damage isn't tracked, except in the instant it occurs.

After being placed, it is a stack of generic damage counters. It might have come from any source, movement of counters, burn, poison, any attack, ability, effect, whatever. So it wasn't KO'd by damage that was caused by an attack. Rather, there was damage on it, and an attack reduced its HP such that the existing damage caused a KO.

You can't track the source of existing damage counters, as they can be moved, removed, swapped, or healed, and they all look the same.

If Miraculous Shine did even 10 damage as it devolved the Pokémon, that could cause Altered Creation's effect to add an additional 30 damage and a bonus prize card.

Not a bug.

Altered Creation GX

For the rest of this game, your Pokemon's attacks do 30 more damage to your opponent's Active Pokemon. (before applying weakness and resistance) If this Pokemon has at least 1 extra [W] Energy attached to it, (in addition to this attack's cost) when your opponent's Active Pokemon is Knocked Out by damage from those attacks, take 1 more Prize card.

(emphasis mine)

As SandaledOtter pointed out, the Pokemon were not knocked out by damage from the attack, they were knocked out because after the effect of Miraculous Shine, they happened to have enough damage on them for a Knockout. Since Miraculous Shine does no damage, Altered Creation does not allow you to take an extra Prize card.

Hello @DenDen128

Thank you for providing the game log for this.

I've gone ahead and edited your comment to include spoiler tags to reduce the post size.
