Noob Pidgeotto deck for a new-ish player.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am a new-ish player of PTCGO, I have most of my theme decks down, and I am winning packs in tournaments. Most people are telling me that since I am a newer player I should make a "pidgeotto" deck since its the cheapest to go for at first and to use my boosters for trades to get that kind of deck. I was wondering if anybody at pointers and explanations about the deck (along with deck lists) that I should go for? Thank you in advanced.

For reference, this is the deck they are talking about:

Pokemon - 20

3 Pidgey TEU 122

1 Pidgey TEU 121

4 Pidgeotto TEU 123

4 Oranguru UPR 114

4 Jirachi TEU 99

2 Articuno-GX CES 31

1 Ditto Prism Star LOT 154

1 Absol TEU 88

Trainer - 36

4 Professor Elm's Lecture LOT 188

2 Lt. Surge's Strategy UNB 178

2 Tate & Liza CES 148

2 Mars UPR 128

1 Cynthia UPR 119

1 Jessie & James HIF 58

4 Pokegear UNB 182

4 Acro Bike PRC 122

4 Crushing Hammer SUM 115

3 Custom Catcher LOT 171

2 Reset Stamp UNM 206

2 Chip-Chip Ice Axe UNB 165

1 Pal Pad FLF 92

1 Escape Board UPR 122

3 Power Plant UNB 183

Energy - 4

3 Water Energy 3

1 Recycle Energy UNM 212

Should you invest in it? No, 100% no. While the deck is certainly cheap to build, you won't have much fun with it as a new player, as it requires you to know the meta, know when to play certain cards and most importantly forces you to play very long control games, which most players aren't to fond of.

If you have competitive experience in other TCGs, then you can consider playing it, but you won't have an easy time, that's for sure.

I used to be pretty big in Magic the Gathering back in the days. If you think this one is not good enough, then what should I build towards instead?

What's your definition of “pretty big”? If you understand concepts such as tempo, know how to use your resources, are able to plan ahead and have a general understanding how the different decks in the meta work, then the deck is a good choice for you.

Just to be clear, Pigeotto Control is a beast of a deck and I'm currently playing it myself, but due to the high skill ceiling it's not very beginner friendly.

As for good budget decks I'm the wrong player to ask, as I'm a sucker for top tier :S. There are a ton of great beginner / budget / fun decks in this forum, so I'm confidant that you can find some inspiration here.

I used to be going in provincials and was on my way to being a pro in MTG.

I think for now I will try this deck, it seems pretty easy to use, fill your hand with energy and kill stuff with Alolan Dugtrio and use the pidgeottos for a draw engine:

Pokémon - 18
* 1 Ditto {*} LOT 154
* 3 Pidgey TEU 121
* 1 Pidgey TEU 122
* 4 Pidgeotto TEU 123
* 4 Alolan Diglett LOT 122
* 4 Alolan Dugtrio UPR 79
* 1 Mew PR-SM 215

Trainer Cards - 30
* 4 Professor Elm's Lecture LOT 213
* 4 Fisherman CES 130
* 2 Escape Board UPR 167
* 2 Aether Foundation Employee LOT 168
* 3 Lady FLI 109
* 2 Lt. Surge's Strategy HIF 60
* 4 Mt. Coronet UPR 130
* 4 Pokégear 3.0 UNB 233
* 3 Pokémon Communication TEU 196
* 2 U-Turn Board UNM 255

Energy - 12
* 12 Metal Energy XYEnergy 7
