What's the best way to spend coins as a brand new player?

Literally just started playing this month; never played this game (online or off) before.

 

So I'm starting to accrue coins. Not many, but I have about 3000 or so. What do I use them for optimally? I have played enough online games to know not to blow all my resources before I get the best options and have the best strategy, so... what should I chase? Just keep saving? Buy anything in particular? What's the best road?

Theme Decks.  ...Start with the newest ones (at the top), and work your way back.  The most recent 6 are all decent enough to be competitive, though you might want to start with Relentless Flame, Blazing Volcano, and Storm Caller, probably in that order.  With these theme decks, you'll be able to gain a bunch more stuff on the Versus Ladder, will get a few good Trainers, and with enough practice, start playing in Theme Deck Events (tournaments).  With tournament winnings, you get tradable boosters which can be used to get the cards for your first Standard format deck.

 

P.S.  Save 1,000 Tokens for the next two Theme Decks, which come out with the next set, on August 2nd.  This will be fun for you, as well as having an equal shot with everyone else (since it will be new, and all).

Blazing volcano is a good one, though if you want you could risk unbroken packs for gx's

I agree with the theme deck counsel. My daughters have recently started playing online, and this is the right idea. You won’t see any GX cards from them, but you can win packs in events that you can trade, and packs that you cannot trade (and Hereford open yourself) in the ladder.
