Umbreon Deck Help

Recommended Posts

This is a deck I threw together myself for fun. I just started playing the TCG again for the first time in maybe 10-15 years. I wanted an all Eevee deck with Umbreon as the evolution. I am having trouble choosing my trainer cards though. The more I play with it the more I want to change. I plan to eventually change the Eevee & Snorlax-GX with 4 Umbreon & Darkrai-GX.

That allows others to look at your deck more easily.

None of your Pokemon are powered by discarding energy, so you have far too much energy in the deck.

Most of them can use the DCE, so keep those.

Dangerous Energy is of very limited value, as it can't trigger Eevee's ability, can't be retrieved by most of your energy seeking cards, and only causes 20 damage to the opponent's EX Pokemon (not GX!) I'd get rid of all of those.

Then remove 4 of the Basic energy, opening 8 spaces for trainers.

You have 20 Pokemon, which is usually too much. Determine which are your primary attackers, and cut the rest back by one or two each, ESPECIALLY the Tag Team. Even if you manage to keep Black Market{*} in play, they will cost too much in prizes, and you really can't count on it staying around. Knock 4 Pokemon off the list, and then there are 12 more spaces for trainers, getting you a respectable 32 total.

In expanded...

Vs. Seeker, Professor Sycamore, more Guzma and Cynthia. Possibly N..?

Just tried changing it to this based on your recommendations. Trainer cards are my weak spot because I'm not really sure what is best. Thank you for the feedback!

You should be able to cut an eevee and umbreon without trouble.  You could also cut another umbreon and replace it with the non-GX one with retaliate.

All of your pokemon are standard, and it doesn't seem like you're relying heavily on Expanded trainers, so I think you can move the deck to the smaller format.  That means your ideal supporters are Cynthia, Lillie, Guzma, Tate & Liza, and Erika's Hospitality.  (You already have some of these!) I suggest a total of 12 between those five, plus maybe an Acerola or another more situational supporter.

I presume the Switch Raft is vestigial.😁 Should be removable.  I'd also advise dropping the potions (with as much HP as you have, 30 doesn't make much difference.  Isn't worth three card slots, anyway.) and the Fan Club.  Nest Ball and Ultra Ball are probably more efficient at getting your pokemon out anyway, and they don't require your turn's supporter.  Other cards worth adding include: choice band, field blower, Lt. Surge, acro bike, and of course consistency pokemon if you can afford them. (Dedenne-GX, Tapu Lele-GX, Jirachi.)

I tried taking those suggestions into mind. I look out the Switch Raft earlier yesterday. I think I accidentally threw it in when trying to throw in a Switch.

Awesome deck! I have always wanted to build a deck based off Umbreon, but I have never gotten around to collecting all the cards for it lol. Based off you deck list you might want to add some Trainer's Mail or Pokegear 3.0 for consistency. Also I would run more copies of Professor Sycamore and VS Seeker. You might want to only run one copy of Pokemon Center Lady and add an extra choice band in its place.

Hope this helps!

Welcome Sevrim.

You've been told a lot of useful tips. From what I can see from your deck, you still have all Standard pokémon but deck relies on Expanded trainers. Awkward this could seem, it's a possible combination but I suggest you check the Expanded pokémon too for if anything might help your deck to improve. There are very good Dark cards and Dark type ruled the format for a while with Yveltal-EX+Darkrai-EX and more. Not telling you you have to include that cards into your deck but I would check Expanded dark type pokémon anyway just in case.

On the other hand 90 damage+30 to bench, doesn't seem too much for our +200HP Tag teams of today. Either way will go on with the idea and I'd mainly focus into still better trainers to move the deck faster.

First is first and any Expanded deck should have an Ace spec card. They are 13 in the game and although in a budget or starting the game Computer search or Dowsing machine can seem very expensive, there are other that can fit any deck and still good like Scramble switch or Scoop up cyclone. Also Master ball or tools like Life dew or Rock guard. Take a look at them.

As per the rest, note you have only 6 basic pokémon. This tends to concede Mulligans quite often. I'd add a second N (or a Judge if fits the strategy) just in case you can use it as 1st turn Supporter to restrict the hand of opponent more often.

VS Seeker... so huge card. Trade until have 4 in collection. When it was still standard, any deck had 4, ever. It remains certainly powerful and 3 is the minimum count in any Meta deck nowadays and a lot include Dowsing machine that could be used as the 4th (to get a Supporter back to hand) or to get a Vs Seeker back to hand (which would let you decide which Supporter to get depending the evolution of the turns). If a deck runs 3, I personally add the 4th if I can replace anything most of the times, love it, and Pal pad becomes close to useless having 4 Seekers.

Thinking about Expanded dark trainers, Dark patch comes fast to mind. Attach energies from discard to dark pokémon, not useful for EevSnorlax but still very useful for Umbreon if you need to attach the DCE by hand and attack that turn. A common combo in dark decks along with Battle compressor. This can be also huge to use your Vs seeker. No Supporter in hand? Vs seeker and Compressor? Let's discard the desired supporter and some energies. Voilà, Supporter plus use of Dark patch, all together. You want to thin your deck? You're not going to use a certain card anymore? You want to rise probability of drawing something? Battle compressor makes it.

1-off usually need to be very useful to be in. Some cards don't help too much having just 1. Acro bike for example. Although helps also to discard things and could be good with Vs seeker and Dark patch, just 1 won't make your day. If it's a piece of your strategy add 2, or 3 or 4. If not, just 1 off becomes randomly used so most of the times don't helps too much. IMO same happens with Pal pad (If Vs seeker enough) or Pokedex.

There are other quite staple cards for Expanded that should be mentioned and you could add 1-off as they are useful almost in any stage of the game: Super rod, Rescue stretcher, and Special charge (if Special energy in the deck). And of course, Ultra ball. Although you get your evolutions through an ability, Gardobor [Garbotoxin] still can be a contender in Expanded (no abilities) and Wobbuffet [Bide barricade] raised popularity lately in some decks. Ultra ball gets you any pokémon, and synergizes with Vs seeker or Dark patch too.

About Supporters, Vs seeker can make you reduce the number of some and have a wider variety of it. You included some "not very Meta". P Center lady has never been widely used, Tate & Liza seems good in paper but it's also a non used card. For the rest, is fine although I'd change the numbers and still remove some just because of space needed (like Lt Surge that could become useful). I'd like to add one Faba also to each Expanded deck, but sometimes there's just no space. Karen is another that could be staple but the risk to face a Night march these days is quite lower than it was before. Still 1 is in a lot of decks though. Lysandre always liked to me although Guzma barely replaced it. Another card you need to know is Giratina PR XY184. Is not played because Break are residual although lately I've found some Greninja with the new Detective Pikachu card and Trevenant is still a contender in any tournament.

Based on your deck I'd try something like this at first and then change things after some games based on what you missed and what you never use from the deck. The stadium could be a different one having Darkrai+1 Switch for retreats? Or add a 3rd Stadium? The strategy of discarding is not working and would be better to cut the Compressors? Would it work faster with 3 Acro bike? You don't find the special energies, the Supporters, other? (Add Energy loto, or Poke Gear 3.0, or...). No need of Rod or Stretcher? A 4th Seeker would give you a win often? You miss Pal pad? One less Sycamore and 1 more N or Lillie? 1-1 Guzma/Lysandre instead of 2 Guzma? It was better the 3-1 Umbreon GX/Non GX than my 2-2? You got a better Ace spec? You traded for some techs like Tapu Lele GX, Mew [Bench barrier] or other? Changes, you know 😉
