Seeking Advice for First Custom Deck

Hello,

I'm relatively new here, and am seeking a little advice for my first custom built deck. To date, I've pretty much been using the trainer challenge theme decks, Torrential Cannon theme deck, and Heart's Shield expanded deck. Whilst enjoyable enough, I'm looking to expand a little now that I've opened up a bunch of packs (from rewards and codes). Any bit of advice would certainly be appreciated and welcome!

Here are some of the, in my opinion, more noteworthy Pokemon (not in any particular order, but just listing some rares) that I could probably include in a deck if it helps any: Gigalith, Conkeldurr, Milotic, Ninetales, LandorusEX, CobalionEX, Greninja, Lapras, Shiftry, Jirachi, Gyarados (with Full Retaliation and Berserker Splash), MagearnaEX, SteelixEX, Cobalion, KartanaGX, Latias, Heatran, Pangoro, and Muk & Alolan MukGX. I just did a filtered search of my rares and sorted newest to oldest, but actually listed them backwards here, lol! Anyway, I only listed ones I could actually use - in other words, I only listed a Pokemon if I had the Basic Pokemon it evolves from.

Thank you for your time and consideration; I look forward to any advice that can be offered!

Sincerely,

DawsonJr

First of all, do you want a Standard (SUM and all cards released afterwards) or Expanded (BLW and all cards released afterwards) deck?

Well, from what I understand, Standard is the more serious game mode, and expanded is more like an anything goes mode; kind of like Hearthstone's Standard and Wild formats, respectively. I suppose I would eventually like to dabble in both, but I'll probably focus a bit more on standard for now.

Not exactly. Expanded is a serious format like Standard complete with a meta and real life tournaments. Although Expanded tournaments don’t go higher than Regionals, Expanded is a serious format and treated so by TPCi.

Hello,

Ah, I see. Well, in any case, as I suggested, I probably will dabble in both eventually; I think sticking with standard to start with would be best since I'm newer. That said, I am down at my grandfather's place now until the first week of next month, so have limited connectivity - unless they finally do something about the game's compatibility with smartphones. I'll probably be semi-active around here, though, so feel free to share some advice/suggestions - even if you think it's pretty basic, it's appreciated and welcome here!

Sincerely,

Actually, Expanded is better to start the game as you already own in collection a lot more Staple trainer cards of Expanded than Standard's when you make your account. In addition, is a wider format with a bigger variety of decks and types, not so focused into Meta decks only. You'll find some, but not every match will be against a high level meta deck so theoretically, anyone can win more habing a good deck.

On the other side is not that hard to start in Standard once you get let's say 2000 tokens an buy 4 of the Theme decks in shop to get a lot of staple trainers from them. They contain a lot of the Staple trainer cards of Standard and you can also make kind of semi-competitive decks for Standard redeeming 2 of the same (like 2 Relentless flame or 2 Mach strike. 2 Torrential cannon could maybe work too).

Of course you can just focus into play Theme at the beginning and with the packs you get from codes and from game Theme events, trade for what you need or trade what you got if you opened the packs also for what you need.

You could try building a Greninja Deck for expanded. The deck is actually quite good and the cards for the deck are not that expansive in the trade market. Cards for the Greninja deck you might want to try and get are dive ball, Greninja Break, Starmie (Space Beacon Ability), N, splash energy.

Another deck you could try building for expanded is a Landorus-EX deck. Basically build the deck to revolve around Landorus-EX as your main attacker and use other fighting support cards such as strong energy to help power up your attacks.

If you need any help building either deck I can post up a deck list for both decks so you can get a possible idea of what cards to use.

Cheers! 😄
