Whimsicott GX - the most broken card in history of TCG

Kostyurik

Recommended Posts

A few minutes ago, I played in Versus Mode and faced against Whimsicott GX. I lose, because my opponent win coin flip too many times in a row.
After that, I go to Tournaments, and tried my luck in expanded tournament (I spended 8 tickets on this try! I can't restore them back until tomorrow!) and faced against Whimsicott GX yet AGAIN!

And again, I lose, because Whimsicott GX just doesn't take any damage in about 80% of the time.

I know, I know - everybody on these forums yelling about broken cards, people tired of it. But I truly believe, Whimsicott GX is the MOST broken of all.
I saw some cards been temporally banned for exploitation, and I want Whimsicott GX to be banned too. Or at least coin flip to be fixed for 50/50 chance instead of 80/20

Also, if somebody knows counter to Whimsicott GX - please ********* would be appreciated

If you’re looking for counters,  I think Stealthy Hood works. It reads

”Prevent all effects of your opponent’s Abilities done to the Pokémon this card is attached to. Remove such existing effects.”

I think Whimsicott GX ability affects only Whimsicott GX itself, not my pokemon. It would work If only I could attach it to oppponent's pokemon

Yeah, the ability says “If any damage is done to this Pokémon”. Sorry about that.

Nope, just nope. For the billionth time, the RNG isn't broken. That you got exceptionally bad luck in 1 game doesn't prove anything.

I find it funny that in over 5 years of existence of this game, despite multiple isolated claims of broken RNG, anyone has yet to provide a SINGLE solid piece of evidence that it really is broken.

Until someone can show a statistically significant data pool that presents deviations that exceed a reasonable margin of error, the only way to explain these isolated claims is that the data pool is too small and that people are getting carried away by confirmation bias.

Hello Kostyurik,

Thank you for providing a game log for this. I've gone ahead and edited your topic to include a spoiler tag to reduce its size.

I haven't seen many decks around Whimsicott-GX in expanded lately but here are some advice to counter them:

1. Ability lock destroys the entire deck so decks like drampa-garb or zoro-garb would be an auto-win. Alolan muk is also a big threat to Whimscott-GX players as your opponent cannot use their fairy charm ability, which makes the possibility of missing attack being 50% rather than 25%.

2. Whimscott-GX struggles to hit for large numbers so if your playing pokemon with higher hit points, you can always use acerola, cassius,  max potion, or even just retreat out of the active to reset prize numbers. Most decks that run big basics (tt) or evolutions normally play at least 1 copy of these.

3. Lucario/focus sash should be really good in expanded right now with all these tag teams running around, not to mention that half of those tag teams are weak to fighting (pikarom, zoroninja).

If you do not play any of the decks above then here is some additional advice for you: Map out your prize cards in advance and play patiently. Notice what your opponent benches, for example, target the lele GX, baby lele, and magearna for the 4 prize cards and you only need to hit through one Whimsicott GX for the game.

Unless your own deck would need Abilities from a Pokémon-EX/GX at that exact moment, or revolves around a different Stadium, Power Plant seems like an easy solution (and one that works against other decks as well).  If your deck has an attack which does something other than damage to ultimately KO an opponent's Pokémon, that provides another workaround.

Usually I highly depend on abilities (Marshadow GX in Night March deck; Darkrai EX, Malamar EX, Incineroar GX in my Greninja/Zoroark deck, etc) and my Florges EX deck revolves around sky field.

But I think I can came up with something.

Thank you for your advices!

Yeah, definitely play around with the idea.  You brought up some great examples of decks where Power Plant may not be worth it.  You yourself will know best, but to explain why a seemingly "impossible" situation isn't, I'll clarify what I meant in my previous post.  I'll detail how Power Plant might still work in the decks you mentioned, but the main thing is that a counter in the cardpool can sometimes help you out even when you don't run it.  Even when your deck can't use it, as long as enough other competitive decks can, it may keep Whimsicott-GX decks in check.

Even when Power Plant clashes with a deck's general strategy or a specific attacker, the question is whether or not it may still be worth it to handle that problem match up.  In other words, it hurts your opponent worse than it hurts you, so it is still worth it.

Working with your own specific examples:

  • Night March typically runs several Pokémon-EX/GX that won't like Power Plant, but it also burns through most of them early game: Dedenne-GX, Shaymin-EX (ROS), and/or Tapu Lele-GX.  Maybe I've just been running the deck wrong for the last however many months (no, really I could be!), but I usually save Marshadow-GX for late game and/or exploiting [F] Weakness.  As such, Power Plant may still be worth it because midgame it shouldn't be messing with any of the aforementioned cards.
  • Greninja & Zoroark-GX decks shouldn't need most effects all the time.  As I haven't encountered the deck much (and not at all in Expanded), does Incineroar-GX need to use its Ability each and every turn?  It is hit or miss as to whether or not you'll need either Darkra-EX's or Malamar-EX's Ability.  Decent odds you can at least get one "reliable" KO out of the deal, dropping Power Plant after you've used the rest.
  • Florges-EX really does need Sky Field to do enough damage, so... yeah.  Theoretically, Florges-EX with Power Plant in play, five [G] or [Y] Pokémon on the Bench, a Choice Band attached to itself, and having used a Professor Kukui just barely OHKO's a Whimsicott-GX.

So... yeah, while not great, Power Plant is plausible in two out of three of these decks.  In many ways, it is similar to how Silent Lab is used in decks that still have Basics with Abilities.
