A slight issue with reputations

I may have a very minor problem with the way community reputations are handled on the forums.  Why are the rating of your posts linked to the rating of your account as a whole?  I don't fully understand the idea behind this because I think it may lead to people only saying what others want them to say.  Essentially what I mean is...  Someone who has a distaste for you for what ever reason can down vote every one of your posts, therefore; giving you a terrible reputation...  Plus, if everyone says the same things, is anything ever really gained?  But please do correct me if I'm wrong!

The trick is being mature/honest enough to not manipulate the Reputation system.  Most such Reputation systems have similar tradeoffs.
