Personally I wouldn't do unless you have like 5000 coins or so. But if you already got Blazing volcano, Mach strike, Torrential cannon, Relentless flame, Hidro fury and some other, why not.

I always preferred to get Theme decks, even older, than getting packs. A pack is 200 coins, 10 cards. A deck is 60 cards with useful pokémon and trainers for 500, way much better. Actually there are some budget decks you can do getting 2 of same Theme (Mach strike, Relentless flame with Magcargo...).

There are good XY decks you can get for some Expanded staples too.

Goal to me is to get all the Theme decks of the game. Packs never guarantee a good pull so personally I don't waste the tokens in them.

In case you didn't knew it: When you beat 12 trainers in the trainer challenge with a new Theme deck you get one free booster. So in essence you get a new Theme deck and one booster for the price of 500 coins.

I'd definitely buy all of the Theme decks from the S&M era once and then consider buying certain decks twice to complete play-sets of trainer cards (i.e. with 2 copies of Machstrike). It's much easier start with the constructed formats if you already have a good chuck of the important traienr and supporter cards.
