ahh base set. i was 10 years old when it came out.

i believe, if i remember rightly, they're bubbles or tadpole eggs.

but how would it be possible to stand on bubbles without them popping?

i asked this very same question when i first got this card

Hello, people. I have a question about the Squirtle card that was released in the Base Set in 1999. This was my very first Pokemon card and I always wondered.. what is Squirtle standing on top of?

hes either standing on some stones or the frozen animation of when someone uses toxic on you.

It's just a mound of rocks stacked up in a pond. You can even see weeds growing out from between some of the stones.

XD It does look like purple bubbles, yeah. It looks like a late-in-the-day shot with all the colors light and everything looking so golden/washed out, and the rocks are sort of shiny and reflecting purple-ish sunset light or something. That's what I always thought to explain the coloration, anyway.

I've never actually thought about it till this topic came up! Some of the art work is confusing at times.
