Talonflame Break

I was inspired YellowSwellow's and DarkIntegralGaming's variants of the Talonflame Break deck, so I decided to try it out for myself. This deck is pretty self-sufficient, as Aero Blitz lets me search for any two cards from the deck. Burning Energy works well in this deck to return to Talonflame Break after a Flare Blitz.

Pokemon:

-4 Fletchling (Generations)

-4 Fletchinder (Steam Siege)

-4 Talonflame (Steam Siege)

-4 Talonflame Break

-1 Flareon EX

Trainers:

-4 Vs Seeker

-3 Trainers' Mail

-4 Puzzle of Time

-2 Super Rod

-3 Bursting Balloon

-3 N

-2 Prof. Sycamore

-2 ******

** Giovanni's Scheme

-1 Fisherman

-1 Lysandre

-1 Pokemon Ranger

-2 Wally

-2 Silent Lab

Energy:

-8 Fire

-4 Burning

Flareon EX is in the deck to have a secondary basic attacker. Any better suggestions over that are welcome.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been away from the forum for a few weeks so I'm just seeing this. How has this deck been working for you? Have you made any adjustments? I played a rogue Talonflame deck in a local Play! tonight and it didn't do so well (very different from your list so no comparison possible). I like the two deck references you quoted and have been interested in trying Talonflame.

I haven't made any adjustments since then. While the idea of Flareon EX being a secondary attacker sounded good on paper, I haven't used it much.

My advice is to cut down on Fletchling. That way, you are more likely to start with Talonflame. Less Flechinder also means more deck space, especially if you are running Rare Candies. I would personally choose a 2/3-1-4-4 line with 3 Rare Candy. Flareon is a questionable choice, as if you are running Burning Energy, it does no good for Flareon, and Silent Lab shuts off Flash Fire. Personally, I like Talonflame better in support to Greninja or Areodactyl, and not as a main attacker, but this idea seems OK.

It may seem tempting to cut down on the Fletchling, but I'll say no to this. If I have less Fletchling than Fletchinder and Talonflame, Fletching's evolved forms will end up being dead weight later on in the game. Besides, I have Winona to fish out the entire evolution line when necessary.

Also, what would you suggest over Flareon?

Fair point, but it does mean sacrificing the chance to use Gale Wings 50%+ of the time. If you  run 3 Fletchling, then 1 Talonflame out through Gale Wings, and 3 out through evolution. Definitely lose 2 or 3 Fletchinder for Rare Candies either way.

As for Flareon, either cut it completely to give yourself the best possible chance of Gale Wings, or replace it with Emboar EX, which is slower, but works better with Burning Energy and outputs similar figures.

Silent Lab does NOT stop Flash Fire. Read the first 3 words of Silent Lab's description. ;)

Flareon EX is a Basic, meaning that its Flash Fire will get negated by Silent Lab.

Edit: how many Rare Candies should I put in? 2? 4?

Probably 3 or 4, depending on how much you want  to gamble on Gale Wings.

If this is the case, obviously I can cut 2 Fletchinder out. If I go with 3/4, what else should I get rid of?

Cut 3 Fletchinder IMO. You need the space badly. Also going to 6 Basic Energy can't hurt too badly, which leaves room for a Professor's Letter or other Trainer if you want 4 Candies. Other than that, nothing in Standard is obviously missing. Best of luck with your deck!

Oops, sorry, I misread. I thought you guys were talking about regular Flareon. Which in retrospect doesn't make sense anyway. Sorry, sleep problems have been making me uncharacteristically dumb lately. :P
