[CARD] Skarmory (XY #80, #145), Lucky Helmet (Ancient Origins #77) - Cards can be drawn via Lucky Helmet when Skarmory's Joust attack is used

So I noticed two glitches in the past few days, first being when my Skarmory EX(80/146 XY) uses Joust on a opponents pokemon that has Lucky Helmet attached. Now Lucky Helmet says that when damage is dealt to the active pokemon it is attached to, that owner draws two cards. Well Joust says that "Before doing damage, discard all Pokemon Tool cards attached to your opponent's active Pokemon." When I used this on my opponent, they still got to draw the cards even though I never did the damage that would let them use the tool's ability.

I don't entirely know what code would be needed to be added in for that glitch to be fixed, but it may need to be in case there are other moves out there that say the same as Joust.

The second glitch I found was when I tried to evolve my Caterpie(1/109 Flashfire) to Metapod using an Evosoda on the turn I played it. Caterpie's ability states that it can evolve on its first turn, but I was not allowed to use the Evosoda to evolve it into Metapod. I don't know if there is a rule I've missed regarding that situation but I feel that it should allow that evolution to take place.
The same glitch can be found when trying to use both Evosoda and Rare Candy on any grass pokemon that was just played while the Forest of Giant Plants stadium is out, which gives all grass pokemon the same ability as Caterpie.

The first one is definetly a bug.

As for the second one, I think it's intentional for rare candy to not work with FotGP. Not certain about the evo sodas, that might or might not be a bug. A lot of times the official ruling in this kind of things comes down to the correct interpretation of a card with vague wording.

1 cookie to Gonzo for the answer on Skarmory.

Here's the basics....

Rare candy wont work on T1 Caterpie because the way the order of operations is supposed to go, it requires that all conditions be met before you can play the card. In the case of Candy + FoGP, if your Pokemon were put into play this turn, it's technically not legal to evolve them with candy, due to the rule on Rare Candy explicitly stating "You can't use this card on your first turn or on a Pokemon put into play this turn". Even though the caterpie has the ability, or FoGP is in play, the rare candy rule takes first priority. Same situation with Evosoda.

So, long story short, no bug on caterpie. (Lol, irony)

Edit* gave Gonzo a cookie :D

@Seminc ok that makes a lot of sense as to why the Rare Candy and Evosoda would not work, I did not realize that the wording on the trainer would take priority over the ability(although if I am playing with friends IRL I would say that they would be able to)

but I'm glad I was able to bring up an actual glitch concerning Skarmory

Yeah the Skarmory glitch is annoying, I've had it happen when my opponent has a rock guard or bursting balloon attached. Which kind of sucks xD

Correct me if I'm wrong but on the last patch note this was mentioned about evosoda:

CARDS
  • Evosoda (XY, 116/146): This card should now function properly with a Pokémon that can evolve on the turn it comes into play.

If a pokemon can evolve on the first turn (due to fotgp, ability or any other reason as it's not specified) theoretically it should work. And evosoda also mentions that the card can't be used on the turn it comes to play.

Or maybe is just the wording but it's true that it's confusing

I think "function properly" is just terminology for "work correctly and deny Evolution when FoGP is in play" but yeah it's confusing.

Hello Trainers!

Regarding the first report, it would be incredibly helpful if you could submit your game log to us via support ticket if you experience this again. You can save the game log from your match by clicking the Social Menu, clicking the Game Log tab, and clicking "Export". This will copy it to your Clipboard where you can paste it into a .txt file and attach it to your ticket. You can create a ticket by clicking the link in my signature, signing in, and clicking "Ask a Question".

Regarding Forest of Giant Plants and Caterpie's Adaptive Evolution Ability versus Evosoda and Rare Candy, here is a compendium ruling that should help:

Q. Can I use Evosoda on a Caterpie the first turn of the game or the turn that Caterpie is played since "Adaptive Evolution" says it can evolve in those cases?
A. No, you can't use Evosoda to evolve in either of those conditions because the text on Evosoda specifically prevents it. (May 29, 2014 TPCi Rules Team)

As the text on Rare Candy and Evosoda specifically prevents it, these cards cannot be used during your first turn or on a Pokémon that was put into play that turn, even if a card says so (Caterpie, Forest of Giant Plants).

I hope this answered any questions! :)
