in the original card game (the first sets) there was just the symbol and no number or times so how much damage do you add. is it one damage counter or is it double damage from attacks

Double damage for attacks of the opponents weakness. :D

Basically, weaknesses are always x2. There were some sets that did so differently (some of those cards are used by AI only in this game), but those sets are ALOT newer than the sets you speak off.
