Typhlosion

Is there a way to use Typhlosion?

I imagine it would be difficult, I kind of thought you'd burn through your deck with Fiery Torch and Scorched Earth setting up Typhlosion, then Energy Recycler until you've got basically nothing but energy left.

I suppose the problem is just getting Typhlosion evolved as the first challenge, but since Massive Eruption takes only one energy that difficulty is greatly diminished.

Entei - Combat Blaze as your lead off basic, since I can't think of any other.  What's the best way to ensure you get at least 2 out of 5, hopefully 3 out of 5?

Impossible?

Let's say you burn through 14 cards setting up Typhlosion and you have 40 cards left, 24 of them would have to be energy to give you the correct ratio, that's not a reasonable number of energy to run in a deck and be able to set anything up.  That's why I figured discarding tons of cards with Sycamore and Torch and Scorched Earth trying to get things set up, then super rod or recycle all your energy once your deck is thinned out.

If you had 25 cards left on turn 3 and you had 15 energies you might get a huge one off.

It's probably not worth it to set up Massive Eruption since there is no way to get a reliable outcome, but it seems like it could be fun.

Natch.

Got it.

Pokedex is not standard and you have to discard all 5 cards, so rearranging them doesn't help, however it will tell you if you are going to get a favourable result and you can shuffle your deck if it isn't.  Thanks, man.

Multiple Gallade - Premonition would let you check a few times, before and after you shuffle, letting you see if you are about to hobble yourself by discarding 4 VS Seekers or something stupid.

That would just make an already difficult and dubiously rewarding strategy even more cloggy though.

Run it like a Swampert-EX deck. Swampert-EX decks run 40 energy. This should work even better than that since you get 5 instead of 4 and it hits for +80 instead of +40. Lookup Swampert-EX decks, there is a video by MikePTCGO.

The only problem I can see is Swampert-EX is ready to go right out of the gates, no evolution necessary.  Also, Mud Flood shuffles those 4 cards back into your deck.  Heatmor was also a basic.  I'm just trying to imagine getting Typhlosion evolved with a hand full of energy cards and nothing else.

So basically the idea is to almost deck yourself out, then use Energy Recycler to make the odds ridculously in your favour.  I did find a Vlog that featured Typhlosion, it basically used Flare Destroy early game and then annihilated everything with Massive Eruption later.   Risky.

Assuming the goal is to thin your deck to say between 5 and 10 cards, then Energy Recycle what's the most ridiculous draw engine, presuming I can only field 2 Shaymin EX?

4 Battle Compressor

4 VS Seeker

4 Sycamore

4 Trainer's Mail

4 Acro Bike

3 Scorched Earth

1 AZ

2 Shaymin EX

4 Ultra Ball (?)

Seems pretty extreme?

Keeping in mind, I need 3 Rare Candy, 3 Energy Recycler (for repeat Massive Eruptions)

36 + 12 Energy

2 Blacksmith

4 Cyndaquil

3 Typhlosion

I kind of figured Entei - Combat Blaze with it's risky first attack (Burning Roar) would possible attach an energy to Cyndaquil / Typhlosion while simultaneously discarding cards from your deck to get you closer to the Massive Eruption condition.  Would really stink if you ended up discarding Energy Recycler, which you really need to shuffle back into your deck until later on.

As for Burning Energy, that's actually a really strange loophole, it is being discarded because of an attack, but since it is not attached to a pokemon when that happens it seems to me that one of the conditions for 're-attachment' is not fulfilled. Read 'effect of an attack blah blah pokemon this card is attached to' not simply 'effect of an attack'.

Burning Energy appears to work excellent for Flare Destroy, mind you.

Octillery is a way better draw engine than Shaymin. I've been using it a lot lately and really like it. You COULD do something like Octillery/Gallade/Typhlosion, but that does seem a bit crazy.

However I think there is good synergy with Maxie's and a discard deck anyway, so it might not be so crazy.

Another idea would be to run Sky Field and Bridgette to quickly pull the pokemon out of your deck, then just Rare Candy into Gallade and Typhlosion. But that gives you no early attackers at all. You could just accept taking a couple of early losses, or run Robo Subs.

You could also do Octillery/Miltank/Typhlosion.

If you don't do the Maxie's thing you could just run 4 Sycamore and 4 VS Seeker and stuff like Revive and Buddy Buddy Rescue.

I think maybe Octillery/Miltank/Typhlosion, with Scorched Earth, Sycamore, Battle Compressor, Revive, Buddy Buddy Rescue, and Max Revive, along with 4 Rare Candy plus 2 Stage 1s, and pretty much the rest is just energy and Energy Recycler. You may not even need Ultra Ball because with Revive, etc. you'll be able to get most of your guys out of the Discard Pile as opposed to from the deck. You may also want Judge to shrink your hand back down and put energy from your hand into the deck.

It 'works' so long as you don't lose all your energy recyclers, after 3-4 turns you're way down on cards and can try Massive Eruption for a big KO.  In the meantime blast through your resources evolving Typhlosion as quickly as possible and Flare Destroy whatever is in your path.

When you copy (ctrl+c) and paste (ctrl+v), the item is stored to and retrieved from your "clipboard" respectively. So, when you copy the deck list to your clipboard using the Deck Manager, all you need is a word processor or place to insert text and you'll be able to paste the list using the ctrl+v command.

Cool, thanks.  I suppose edit in a word processor does make lots of sense, there was like 35 pages of debug info or something. . .

Anyways after turn 3-4 I'm down for less than 20 cards and usually there is tons of energy discarded, recycle it and swing for the fences.

This one came together like it is supposed to.

It's easy to deck out if you mess up with discarding energy recycler too early and multiple Massive Eruptions are pretty difficult to pull off.  I won one game with 0 cards left and could only discard 4 for the attack.

I think it could use more energy, or more VS Seekers / Blacksmith to make Flare Destroy more reliable.

The other thing might be more energy, Shaymin might be better than Unown, I simply haven't got any online.  If you have energy on the field, there is less in your deck.  having more than 1 Typhlosion set up means 1/3 or more of the basic energy is not available for you and your deck needs to be down to less than 10 cards.

You almost want one KO'd so you can recycle the energy.

I have tried a lot of different variants for this deck including set up Shaymin, Bunnelby, rare candy, etc. ...this version seems to be the most consistent for me and I hope it help you too. It's a fun deck to play.

Pokémon: 12

- 4 Cyndaquil

- 4 Quilava

- 4 Typhlosion

Trainer: 30

-4 Battle Compressor

-3 Energy Recycler

-2 Level Ball

-2 Revive

-1 Sacred Ash

-4 VS Seeker

-1 AZ

-1 Bridgette

-1 Lysandre

-2 Professor Birch's Observations

-3 Skyla

-2 Wally

-4 Scorched Earth

Energy: 18

-18 Basic Fire

The structure of this deck layout is to use Typhlosion's first attack, 'Massive Eruption'. The goal is to get all cards, like supporter's, into discard pile to VS Seeker for use. Evolve quickly as possible, and KO every time. :) good luck!

I will try it, thanks.

I was worried including 2 Shaymin-EX would give me Shaymin starts all the time, whereas 4 Unown means less mulligans and an Unown start isn't so terrible.

I tried a few games using the first attack early, it makes it almost easier to cut your deck  down drastically so you can get really good ones at the end, but you miss always when you really need to do some damage and there is always that moment of worry at what has been discarded.  More VS Seekers and Revive, Buddy Buddy and so on probably would help.

I think more VS Seeker and Buddy, but I think maybe Unown is better than Shaymin in this deck. The nice thing about Unown is you can use it kind of like a Robo Sub if you need to as well. I'd stick with Unown.

here is my version of the deck....I win over 75% of my matches with this deck

POKEMON:

4 Miltank

4-4-4 Typhlosion line

TRAINER:

4 evo soda

4 level ball

3 energy recycler

2 battle compressor

3 Wally

3 Birch

3 Skyla

TRAINER:

22 Fire Energy

The goal here is to start with a miltank and slowly work through the first half of your deck and build up typhlosions on your bench. I usually go through 3 miltanks before i start attacking with typhlosion, and probably 90% of the time have at least 1 typhlosion on the bench by turn 3. By the time you attack with typhlosion, there should only be 4 or so energy on your side of the field (because each pokemon only needs 1 for its main attack) and should have recycled all energy back into your deck. By this time, it is OHKO after OHKO....its all about using those tanks as a wall!!!!

Too true.  60 HP, it could be worse. and only one prize:  also discarding an energy to retreat it almost fits into the plan.  At least it's not Mulligan Mulligan Shaymin start.

I think maybe I cut cut down on a few Acro Bike to give me +1 VS Seeker.  Maybe replace a Birch / Sycamore with  Judge / Shauna, since I can't draw too deep into the deck late game looking for Energy Recycler, I need to try saving a Trainer's Mail or Skyla for it or I get a mitt full of energy.

I might try Miltank, Homie.   Why not?

For sure, though I've been getting Typhlosion turn 2.  Eats up about 4-5 minutes the first 2 turns, but I get one.

When I had tried the Shaymin-EX I did typically start with it, or I had like ..5 energy ...lol. I'd care to know what you end up using, and how you're win ratios are :)

OK, let me play the ladder a bit more.

Sometimes I beat very organised decks, but it's 50/50.  Slow EX decks are food for Typhlosion: I can take 6 prizes no problem, other decks that force 6 KO's are more difficult, like Night March / Vespiquen, however Flare Destroy is an excellent attack that both KO's and can discard energy so it can be favourable. Discarding special energy is great.

I need to play a lot more matches before I can report anything tangible...

Anyways, game's broken.

Says I've won 6 out of the last 4.

Not sure how that works, PTCGO probably has the only computer servers on planet Earth that are bad at math.

I tried replacing Acro Bike with . . . stuff . . . and it hurt my first couple turns badly somehow.  I need all that ridiculous item draw it seems, to get set up.  The chain of draw that led to Typhlosion seemed not to work so well.  1 more Energy Recycler was definitely not the way to go.

One thing I can sat is that it's far from a sure win.

Against many decks I think are the main archtypes at least it's a good game.  I haven't played a lot of lock decks, but there are a few options for draw that aren't item based, Unown and Scorched Earth, but not having access to VS Seeker and items to evolve Typhlosion early would pretty much mean auto loss.

It kind of matches well against special energy decks because of Flare Destroy but I think Night March and so on are simply too fast.  You need at least 2-3 turns for sure to evolve and what not.

What's awesome is that it's any energy card for Massive Eruption, special energy any kind of basic, I'm not sure if you get 160 for a double colourless or double dragon but there's certainly no reason to test that.

Unown is definitely the way to go, one way to ensure you get your set up is by not giving up two prizes for a Shaymin, you only need one energy for Massive Eruption so if a few pokemon get KO'd on the way, no big deal.

Brigitte is excellent for this, fetching you an extra Cyndaquil and an Unown or two.

I dunno who mentioned it, but it was in another thread about Brigitte and Unown's synergy, I like that it has a versatile use (Brigitte) when paired with Unown.

I think it means won six, lost four. Also, with pokedex, I meant put non-energy on top, then draw it so your deck has less other stuff.

Aaaah.

Yeah, I never thought of that. . . I've got a few ways to draw into the top two cards of my deck.

Played in a friendly today, 3 matches.

Expanded M Tyranitar / Yveltal EX / Bats

lost on turn 2

Scramble Switch to Yveltal EX - Cyndaquil KO'd

Standard M Redtwo

win on turn 5-6

Flare Destroyed DCE - Back to back Massive Eruptions to KO two M Mewtwos

Standard Houndoom EX / Bunnelby / Crawdaunt

win on turn 5-6

Mill deck helped run the deck down to nothing, 3peat Massive Eruption.

Soooo.

I've been playing Typhlosion a lot with the list I had.  It's fun but not doing too well. (50%)  I think it might work if I was a little more conservative.   Most games I lose are because resources I needed were discarded by accident in an effort to thin my deck and make Massive Eruption a sure attack.  It's extremely vulnerable to late game Judge, I think maybe I will try to focus more on turn 2 Flare Destroy, which is a really strong play.

I'm figuring Judge would be an excellent supporter for me, disrupting my opponent and limiting my draw later in the game when hopefully I am 80-90 percent energy.  Skyla is an excellent supporter allowing you to cherry pick Energy Recyclers late game, hopefully getting all of them into your hand before you try and take the big KOs.

Battle Compressor is also really great late game, to make the odds really good you'll KO a Mega and early, to compress, say Blacksmith, Brigette and Skyla early on so you can set up quickly.

The problem with Judge is that it can be hard to have an explosive start with it early on, even with ridiculous item draw power.

Some major issues include vulnerability in turn 1-2 until you are able to evolve, lots of decks can put some hurt on in their first turn.  (I lost one insane match against Hoopa Ray in turn 3, he had benched 4 Shaymin, 2 Hoopa, 2 Rayquaza EX and evolved a M Ray on his first turn).

Most item lock decks using Vileplume I've been able to outspeed, but turn 1 Vileplume is difficult for any deck to deal with.

I'm thinking removing a few item draw cards for Quilava, VS Seeker to make sure it's possible to get more than 2 Typhlosion more often.

I might replace Sycamore with Birch so all my draw support can put Energy Recycler back into the deck.

It seems easy with only the 13 energy to get your deck down and stuff them all back in for the first attack.

Other notable losses, Focus Sash, what to do? Tackle for 10?  Focus Sash is very difficult to deal with when your only two attacks are 130 or hopefully 240-400 damage.

I might try to include Combat Blaze Entei maybe 2 copies to give me some cover and fight against smaller opponents where the risk of Massive Eruption when Flare Destroy isn't an option is truly not worth it.

The best way to counter Focus Sash is either poison or tool removal, so running 1 Xerosic is typically a good idea (can be gotten with VS Seeker from discard).

Yes, the deck I made has absolutely nothing to deal with opposing strategies. . .  I mean there isn't even 1 switch card or anything, a Pokemon Center Lady might help, since there's no way to deal with status effects on Typhlosion, everything else has a single retreat cost, but Typhlosion. . . not so much. Switch / Escape Rope might be better though., Xerosic would be easy to add.  Yeah, lots of one-of supporters is something I'll try, and a few more VS Seeker of course, part of the goal is to compress them all anyways.

I'm just worried I'll never get set up if I take the focus away from the strategy, but there is obviously got to be better ways to play it.
