Booster codes: how do they work?

So let me get this right; if I buy physical boosters, I get a code for the exact contents of that booster?

 

And same for theme decks and whatever else has codes in them?

 

PS: This part of the ecosystem needs a proper guide/ tutorial that new players will find before they even log in. I had no idea the online game was going to be tied to physical cards at all.

No. If you purchase a physical booster pack and use the code, the cards you get online from that code will be very different; however, the theme decks will be the same.

 

I should also point out that if you used a code that came with a box (say, Diancie-EX box), the code card will only unlock Diancie-EX, M-Diancie-EX, and a coin.
