Jirachi EX - worst starter ever

Hi, I'm playing a deck that locks - garbodor for abilities, zebstrika ( I have no Toad-EX) for items, and Exeggcutor for supporters. I also play a battle compressor + Archie's for my milotic. However, there's a big problem with this deck - out of the four times I've tested this deck, I started out with Jirachi EX two times.

Now, I only put one jirachi into the grand pokemon count of eight, so it may be pretty likely to get it. But I don't run stage 2s, only stage 1s, so I don't get why I start with jirachi so many times. Help?

Aw...Jirachi EX actually isn't the worst starter (well, if you have decks with Scoop Up Cyclone, Super Scoop Up, Cassius, AZ, etc.) but I hear what you're saying. Anyways, only 4 matches you've tested? Yes, having Jirachi EX start twice out of 4 is "unlucky" but it happens. I suggest expanding your criteria to a more balanced number of matches played in order to get closer to the law of probabilities. What I am saying is this, test 100 battles, and then see how many times you start with Jirachi EX after that. When you do, you will see the odds and probabilities all work out over time as they are supposed to. So short term it may seem like "bad luck" (and in the moment it "is"), however over time the law of probabilities works itself out. It's really how casinos make money, over time the odds and probabilities are in their favor, however in the moment a player may win big. Anyways, this is the same thing, but reverse here (since you the player didn't "win big" with Jirachi EX starting, lol).

Anyways, hope that helps, and chin up and hang in there. Or, you could remove Jirachi EX from your deck if it's that much of an issue that you hate starting with it. Anyways, good luck and all the best, :)

PS, 1 out of 8 it will hit a fair bit, just fyi,

To be honest I always have a fear to start with something other.

Nowadays with the starting player isn't allowed to attack on turn one anymore the worst starter is Exeggcute as the only basic and you go second. And with so many players still playing the ugly combo of Hypnotoxic Laser + Virbank City Gym you can most of the time scoop the game the moment you see that as the only starter when your going second.

But in the end it is just as DesDaddy already said: the benefit of strong supporting Pokémon basics is that they are at times worse starters (yes fighting Pokémon like Hawlucha are way better with their free rereat cost or Keldeo EX is never a problem in general to bench as the onliest option in the beginning).

And if we play cards like Jirachi EX or Exeggcute for better discarding / drawing engine we have to handle the fact that at times we have to start with them. But in the long-run luck isn't a factor as stated in the previous message already and the starting Pokémon will even out to the usual probabilities.

Though I have to add that 1 out of 8 is not even the probability to start with Jirachi EX, as besides the deck has 8 basics sometimes we even have more basics in our starting hand and then if Jirachi EX is paired with another basic we surely don't bench it. :)

I guess a look in the old statistics book will help here (combinatorics) to know the exactly starting percentage of a solely Jirachi EX in the opening 7 cards.

Jirachi is certainly a terrible start, but it can be far worse. You can retreat, switch, Scoop ups or sacrifice. Usually, I'd just use Jirachi as a Bullet sponge, but if I'm able, I'll use the Scoops over sponges.

Mind providing a list so we can help you out of this situation?

Sure! I've changed the deck quite a lot than the time of writing, so now it has 9 basics. I've play tested 12 times, but 6 times I still got Jirachi EX as only starter  <_<

Pokemon (9):

2 Blitzle

2 Zebstrika (NXD)

1 Jirachi EX

1 Exeggcute

1 Exeggcutor

1-1 Trubbish-Garbodor

Trainers (40):

1 Super scoop up

3 Acro Bike

1 Vs seeker

2 Ultra Ball (to get exeggcutors and garbodors)

1 Energy Switch

1 Battle Compressor (Nice synergy with Junk Arm and Vs Seeker)

1 Hypnotoxic Laser

2 Professor's Letter

1 Switch

4 Bicycle

1 Junk Arm

1 Tool Retriever (for jirachi's ability and garbodor, in case I need to use Jirachi)

2 Maintenance (Cut down from 4)

3 Level Ball (Grabs all pokemon barring Gabodor and Exeggcutor)

2 Sycamore

1 AZ

1 Lysandre

1 Xerosic

2 Skyla

1 Teammates (In a deck whose max HP tops at 100, this is vital)

1 Trump Card (Usually, I'd have around 20 cards left on the 3rd turn because of the acro bikes and bicycles)

2 N

1 ACE SPEC life dew (preferred over cpu search, plus I don't have it anyway)

1 Float stone

2 Silver Bangle

1 Head Ringer

Energy (11)

1 Herbal Energy

2 Rainbow Energy

5 Electric Energy

3 Grass Energy

Your idea is fun, but you have way too much going on, and it's way too thin, and too many "1 of" cards for this deck to be anywhere close to consistent. :(. You are trying to do 3 different things in a deck. Most of the time you can do 1 thing excellent, sometimes you can have 2 things, but when you try to do 3 and then rely on two thirds of your attackers to be 1-1 lines it just is way too thin. Sometimes 1-1 gets prized, sometimes they aren't there when you need them or you don't have the "1 of" trainer at the time you want it. It really comes down to consistency :(.

Now, that being said, if you are playing this deck for fun, and it's not meant for meta play or competitive play, then please disregard what I wrote above. If this is the case, and you are enjoying these 60 cards and they aren't frustrating you, then by all means, continue. :)

You really got Jirachi EX as the lone starter 6 out of 12? I remember when I created a unique and different deck that happened to me as well, but over time it all rounds out. GL with what you're trying to do, maybe Iron Bat can be of some help. I didn't mean the above to be negative, but just honest, just like I would want someone to be honest with me about my 60, hope that makes sense. I do suggest/encourage bulking up on what you want your primary strategy to be, at least 2-2 lines. And then the key cards you want to have at least 2 of them, again, consistency..

GL though, and all the best, :)

I'd drop Eggs, AZ, energy switch, Laser, SSU and Skylas. Replace with 2 N, 4 Professor Juniper and 1-1 Garbodor. Drop all bikes for another 1-1 lines of Zebstrika and Garbodor.

I like Zebstika/Garbodor, and I believe I may actually have a list of my own, and I'd love to share it with you. Would you like my list?
