Note: Because some of my explanations can get a bit long to read, I have included brief summaries at the end of each major section. If you're finding things a bit hard to follow, it might be easier to read these first.

Welcome to the Unofficial Player's Guide

The Unofficial Players Guide is here to help you! We are always updating to make sure the information is correct and up-to-date, but any feedback, suggestions or corrections are always welcome!

If you're new to the game, Welcome to TCGO! I would advise starting below with Message #3 and working your way down. If you have a specific question you need answering - you might well find the answer in the FAQ in Message #2. If you cannot find an answer, please leave a reply to this thread and it will be answered as quickly as I or one of my friends possibly can!

Terminology

Throughout the Guide, I will refer to specific features and buttons. Just to make them a little easier to understand, I've included a quick list here:
Home Menu Screen

The Title Page that appears when you load up the game (after you close the Daily Rewards Notification). It is possible to Navigate back to this page from most other Pages by clicking the Pokemon Trading Card Game Logo in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Menu Bar

The Menu Bar is a black bar found at the top of all screens after you have clicked away from the Home Menu Screen. It holds many quick links, including links to Battling, Trading, Friends and Settings.

In-Game

In the main (downloaded) game client window - not on the Forums or Website.

Chat Window

The little box in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. It can be minimised by clicking the ▼ icon.

Battle Homepage

The Battle Homepage can only be accessed by clicking the ► icon from the Menu Bar. It provides links to the Trainer Challenge and Versus Mode.

Collection Menu

The Collection Menu is a 3 x 2 grid, allowing you to access various aspects of your collection. The Collection Menu can be accessed either from the Home Menu Screen under 'Cards' or by clicking the 3 card symbol from the Menu Bar.
Trading Homepage

Not an official homepage, but the screen you land on when you click the Trading Icon in the Menu Bar. This page shows Public Offers, and has a bar at the top with links to create new trades or view your offers.

Binder

Not an official term, but one used regularly by players. A Binder refers to all the cards a player has tagged for trade. You can view your Binder by going to the 'For Trade' sub-menu under 'Collection' and you can view other player's Binders when creating a 'New Private Trade'. See Message #6 for how to update your binder.
Battles

Battling is the main focus of the game: allowing you to take on not only AI-controlled opponents, but also your friends.

You can Navigate to the Battle Homepage by clicking the 'Play' or ► icon on the left of the Menu Bar. It is then possible to access all Game Modes from here, both Single Player and Multiplayer. It is not possible to access the Battle Homepage from the Home Menu Screen, but it is possible to access the seperate sub-options from this screen.

If you are unsure of the mechanics, rules or technical aspects of the game it is worth playing through the Tutorials first. These can be found by clicking 'Learn' on the Menu Bar of the TCG Online Website and then following the on-screen instructions. If you are still having difficulties, sometimes it is better just to play a few games yourself before seeking further assistance.

Single Player

Trainer Challenge

To access the Trainer Challenge, either click 'Single Player' then 'Gold League' from the Home Menu Screen, or click 'Trainer Challenge' (the yellow option) on the Battle Homescreen.

The primary Single Player mode is called the 'Trainer Challenge'. Here, you have to work your way through three Leagues in order to win the Gold, Diamond and finally Platinum Cups. There are 12 battles to play through in each League, meaning the campaign is 36 challengers long.

It is currently only possible to use pre-constructed Theme Decks for the Trainer Challenge. You are given three - BW Basic Blue, Green and Red - for free, but you can unlock more from the shop (See Message #8 below). These free decks can be unlocked for use outside of the Trainer Challenge by winning seven battles with them against different opponents. After your seventh win, the unlocked free deck will appear in your Collection.

There are plenty of Prizes available from the Trainer Challenge, including 45 free Booster Packs and the three free decks! Trainer Tokens are awarded after each battle - win or lose, as well as 'Experience Points' that correspond to each of the 36 battles. These Points accumulate over all your battles against that individual AI opponent to give you a star rating - and you earn more points by playing on higher difficulties. Earning 4 stars (30,000 total points) will earn you a free booster pack for each challenger - giving you a total of 36 free booster packs, and 9 additional free packs are obtained for fully completing each League and beating all 36 opponents.

Quick Battle & Practice Battle

Quick Battles will instantly set up a battle for you with a Random Basic Deck against the AI. To start a quick battle, click 'Single Player' and then 'Quick Battle' on the Home Menu Screen.

Practice Battles allow you to select your Deck and Opponent Difficulty. To access the Practice Battle Menu click 'Versus Mode' on the Battle Homepage, and then click 'Practice Battle'. On the Practice Battle Menu, clicking change on the various options will allow you to select your level and deck choices from the menus above. Once you have selected your preferences, simply click 'Play Now!' to begin a battle.

It is not possible to earn Trainer Tokens from either Practice Battle nor Quick Battle.

Multiplayer

Player vs Player (PvP)

The most popular battle arena is PvP Mode. It can be accessed either from the Home Menu Screen by clicking 'Multiplayer' then 'Player vs Player' or from the Battle Homepage by clicking 'Versus Mode'.

The PvP Battle Menu lets you pick your level, Format and Deck. There are a choice of two levels, Novice and Expert, with the main difference between the two being that you cannot earn any extra Trainer Tokens from a Novice Game after the 10 Daily Bonus tokens. In Expert PvP you will earn one Trainer Token for every battle that lasts longer than 5 minutes.

There are also three Formats to choose from, Modified, Theme and Unlimited. The Modified format only allows decks containing cards that are legal in the current Modified Format: those found in the expansions of Next Destinies and more recent (for a full list, view the FAQ). The Theme Format only allows the use of the pre-constructed Theme Decks (such as those that can be purchased from the shop) and the Unlimited Format allows you to use any cards you want in your deck.

When selecting your deck, there are tabs at the top of the screen to help you filter decks which are legal for the Modified, Theme and Unlimited Formats. Once you have selected your Level. Format and Deck, simply click 'Play Now' to be randomly paired up with another player and begin your battle!

Friend Battle

The Friend Battle Menu can be accessed in exactly the same way as Player vs Player Mode, except by clicking 'Friend Battle'. If you need help with adding friends, please view Message #5 below.

In Friend Battle Mode, you can challenge any player who is on your friends list and currently online! The option to select who you want to battle replaces the options for a PvP Level - but you can still select a Format and any deck you wish. As before, once you have made your selections, simply click 'Play Now' and wait for your opponent to accept the challenge.

No Trainer Tokens can be earned from Friend Battle, including the 10 Daily Bonus Tokens.

Tournament Mode

Tournament Mode is currently not released as it is still under development. It is scheduled for a November 2013 release date, but this may be pushed back if other developments take a higher priority.

You can find links to Tournament Mode on both the Battle Homepage and from the Home Menu Screen, but neither are selectable.

Your Profile

Your Profile is an extremely important part of the TCG experience - it includes your security settings, achievements and the ability to change your in-game appearance. It is worth taking a few minutes to play with these settings in order to optimise your enjoyment of the game.

Viewing Your Profile

Your can view your profile by clicking the 'Single Head' icon from the Menu Bar (second from the left). This gives you access to your Achievements, Game Stats and Collection Records. The Leaderboard feature has not yet been introduced to the game - so don't worry that you can't see them!

Feel free to browse through these at your own leisure - as there aren't any options or settings to change here. It is also possible to view your current Avatar Appearance on this screen, as well as there being a handy link to 'Edit Your Settings' - but more on that later.

Account Settings

It is not possible to edit your account settings from the Game Client. These can only be changed by logging into the Pokemon TCG website (pokemontcg.com) and in the Title Bar next to 'lv 01' clicking the dropdown list where your username appears then clicking 'My Account'

Under this menu, you have the possibility to edit many of your preferences, from username to chat preferences. If you don't understand what any of the settings mean it is best to leave them alone as it is very easy to disable something without realising! Once your have edited your settings to your content, scroll right the way down to the bottom and remember to hit save!

Some other settings you selected when registering for Pokemon TCG Online cannot be edited yourself. Should you ever wish to change a setting, such as Chat Restrictions on a child account, you will need to go to support.pokemon.com to submit a ticket. If you need further assistance with this, view the 'Bug Fixes' thread described in Message #9.

Avatar Creator

The Avatar Creator can be found by clicking the T-Shirt icon in the Menu Bar. Although Avatar Creator has not yet been fully developed, you can edit features such as your Gender, Basic Facial Features, Skin Tone and select from a limited range of clothes. Simply click through these features to explore them - it is all fairly straight forward. When you are finished, remember to click save! After you have done this, your avatar preferences will be saved and will appear whenever you start a PvP Battle.

A larger update for the Avatar Creator is scheduled before Christmas - and should bring with it numerous more avatar items to choose from - many of which will need to be redeemed with Trainer Tokens from the store.

It is currently not possible to update your Forum Avatar. Those with customised Forum avatars either have generic images, or set up their avatars when this game was in an earlier stage of its development when this was possible.

Summary

Viewing Your Profile

Friends

Pokemon TCG Online is all about socialising with your friends! Being Friends with someone allows you to Battle, Trade and Private Message them - making it a highly useful feature!

Adding Friends

There are two simple ways to add people as friends in-game. You can view your friends list at any time by click the 'Three-Head' symbol and clicking the 'Friends' tab that appears from the dropdown menu. Any player's name highlighted in Green means they are online right now.

Method 1: If you and the person you want to add are in the same chat lobby, you can add them as a friend by clicking the Friends Icon, going to the 'Lobby' tab, typing in their username into the text box to filter their profile, and then clicking the + icon. This will send a friend request to the other player.

Method 2: This method works at any time - whether the person you want to add is online or offline. Simply click the Friends Icon in the Menu Bar, go to the 'Friends' tab and type in their username into the text box. When you are happy, press Enter on your keyboard to add them to your friends list and send a request to them. Note: The spelling must be correct - although it does not need to be case-sensitive.

Whenever someone else adds you as a friend, you will receive a notification (a little yellow box) on the Friends Icon. If you have friend requests there - simply click the Friends Icon which will automatically load on the 'Requests' tab - allowing you to accept or deny any friend requests.

Chat & Lobbies

One of the easiest ways to socialise in the TCGO client is by chatting. By default, when you sign in your will be placed in one of the 4-5 generic lobbies amongst other players - and to chat, simply type into the chat window.

If you wish to join another lobby, click the + icon on the chat window and select which lobby you wish to join. You can view who else is in any given lobby with you by clicking the Friends Icon and going to 'Lobby'

Please remember that the game is moderated - and that your conversations should be appropriate for children of a younger age. It is also against the rules to harass, troll or bully.

Blocking & Reporting

Blocking and Reporting are extremely important both to ensure your own safety and the safety of others. Blocking a player will stop him being able to contact, message or battle you and reporting a player will flag their recent actions up to a moderator allowing them to consider the player for a suspension or other sanction.

To block or report a player, assuming they are in the same lobby as you, simply click the Friends Icon, and in the 'Lobby' tab filter their username by typing into the text box. Once you have found the player you were looking for, you can click the 'No Entry' symbol to block them, or the ! symbol to report them. If you report a player, you will be asked to give brief additional information to help a Moderator find the source of the problem.

Summary

Adding Friends:

 • Click the Friends Icon
 • Find their username, and click the + symbol
 • Players in green are currently online

Chat & Lobbies:

 • The Chat window is the best place to socialise
 • Press + to open a new lobby.

Blocking & Reporting:

 • Open the Friends Tab
 • Find the person you wish to block/report
 • Press the 'No Entry' icon to block
 • Press the ! icon to report

Cards

Your Collection is vitally important to your TCG experience - allowing you to build decks, trade cards and open booster packs!

Important Note: Cards which you obtained for free will have a red lock besides them. This means they cannot be traded.

Collection

You can find the Collection Menu either by clicking 'Cards then 'Collection' on the Home Menu Screen, or by clicking the three card symbol from the Menu Bar. This takes you to the Collection Menu, where you have 6 options:

Cards:

The 'Cards' sub-menu shows every single card in your collection - as well as the quantities you have of them. You can scroll through your card using the < and > arrows, or you can search for a specific card by typing its name into the Search text box. To speed up your search for a certain type of card, such as only 'Psychic Type Cards' you can use the Filters - which are available by clicking the Yellow 'Filter' Button. If you don't understand anything in this menu, please check the FAQ. To enlarge a card to view it more clearly, simply Right-Click it.

A very useful feature here is the 'Show All' checkbox. Normally this will be unticked, meaning you can only see cards you actually own, but ticking the box will show every single card available in game (and even a few that aren't!). This can be very useful for discovering new cards, or trying to work out which cards you don't own yet.

If you select a card (by left clicking it) you have the option to tag it by using the Orange, Green and Blue buttons underneath it. There are only two tags worth using: 'For Trade' or 'Wanted'. Tagging a card for trade will add it to your Binder, allowing other people to send you offers for it. Tagging a card as wanted means when other people send you trades, they will be able to see that you want these cards. Regular players should try to update these tags regularly to make sure they are up to date.

Packs:

This sub-menu allows you to view and open any booster packs or Theme Decks you currently own. You can left click a Booster Pack select it or right click it to enlarge it. Once selected, you can them open the Booster Pack by clicking the Purple 'Open Pack' button, or you can tag it for Trade or Wanted, using the method mentioned above. You can also open a Booster Pack by double-clicking it.

Items:

With the exception of the recently released 2013 Promotional Items, Item trading is currently limited and under development. Is it most likely this page will be empty for now.

Other Menus:

The remaining three sub-menus allow you to view cards you have tagged under the three categories of 'For Trade', 'Wanted' or 'Review'. This can make it easier to manage your tagged cards.

Deck Manager

The Deck Manager Menu is the hub for building, managing and editing the decks you want to use in Versus Mode. To access it, simply click the box icon (5th in from the left) from the Menu Bar, or click 'Cards' and then 'Deck Manager' from the Home Menu Screen.

The Deck Manager Menu allows you to view all your decks - and has three tabs to filter between Theme, Modified and Unlimited decks that correspond to the three formats used in PvP Mode (For help with these, view the FAQ).

To create a New Deck, simply click 'New Deck' in the bottom right corner, that will deck you to the Deck Builder Screen. To view, edit, clone or delete an existing deck, highlight the deck by clicking it, and then click the corresponding button in the bottom right corner which will perform the relevant actions. Editing a deck will also take you to the Deck Builder Screen.

The Deck Builder Screen has an upper and lower section. The upper section shows the cards in your deck, and the lower half shows your collection (with all the same features you can see in the Collection Menus). Note that your cards are split into Pokemon, Trainers and Energy (shown by the larger buttons at the top of the Deck Builder Screen) - and that you need to go through each menu to select the cards you might want.

To add a card to your deck, simply double click it in the lower section, and it will appear in the upper section. To remove a card from your deck, double click it in the upper section. You can also drag and drop cards from one section to another. Remember, a deck can only consist of 60 cards, and you may add no more than 4 copies of any card to your deck (excluding energy)

When you are happy with your deck, click 'Save Deck' which will take you to one more page where you can rename your deck. You can also select a custom coin, deck box and sleeve to accompany your deck but be aware that you might have to trade or purchase these items to acquire them, as they are not usually free. Click 'Save' to confirm your choices and save your deck.

Saved and legal decks will then appear in the deck selection window under Versus Mode.

Trading

If you want to get anywhere in TCGO, opening packs is never enough. To get some of the best cards, or maybe that one card that's missing from your collection - you will need to trade. Trading is a very big part of the game (I mean, it's in the name!) so it's well worth knowing what to do.

You can access the Trading section by clicking the Trading Icon - which is the two card symbol in the Menu Bar with arrows between them, or by clicking 'Cards' then 'Trading' on the Home Menu Screen.

Important Note: Cards which you obtained for free will have a red lock besides them. This means they cannot be traded.

Public Trades

Public Trades are often the fastest way to find the cards you need. Public offers are trades created by any player for any other player to accept. Public Trades technically have no restrictions other than the 100 card limit, but it is worth remembering that some trades can be a little less than fair - so always check before accepting a Public Offer!

Creating Public Trades:

To create a new Public Trade, click the 'New Public Trade' button on the Trading Homescreen. This will take you to the trade creation page. Cards you are offering in a trade are shown on the left, and cards you wish to receive are shown on the right of the screen. Try not to get confused!

To add cards to either side of the trade, simply click 'Add' on the relevant side of the trade. If the cards you want aren't appearing, you will need to untick the box at the top of the pop up window which says 'Tagged for trade only'. Don't forget that each side of a trade can hold a maximum of 100 cards or items.

Once you are happy with a trade, simply click 'Create Offer' to post the trade. Make sure the checkbox saying 'Use Like for Like Trading' is unticked - or you probably won't be able to create your offer. After creating your trade, you will no longer be able to offer those same cards again in another trade until the current trade those cards are involved in has expired. (Though you can post as many Public Trades as you want at any time) Trades will expire either when they are accepted, or after 8 hours.

Accepting Public Trades:

The main Public Offers screen allows you to see every single Public Trade that is live at that moment. Typically the window will only show you offers ending over the next 30 minutes, but you can use the search box to help find more offers.

If you are looking for a specific card, simply type the name of the card into the search box and hit enter. If no results are returned, it is likely to be because you do not have the necessary cards to accept any of these trades. To view Public Offers you cannot actually accept (not sure why you would want to..) then simply untick the box on the right labelled 'Show Only Offers I can Accept'.

To accept a Public Trade, simply double click the trade to view it, where then have the option to click 'Accept'. If you do click accept, you will be taken to a confirmation screen where you can view the trade one last time before accepting. If the 'Accept' box is greyed out, it either means you either do not have the cards needed to complete the trade, or you need to scroll down all the way to the bottom on both sides of the trade.

Once you have accepted a Public Trade, congratulations - those cards are now yours! They might take a few moment to appear in your collection, and you will receive a notification at the top of the page telling you the trade has gone through.

Private Trades

Creating Private Trades

To create a New Private Trade, simply click 'New Private Trade' from the Trading Homepage. Before you start trading with someone, it will make your life a lot easier if you add them as a friend, and then untick the 'Use Like for Like Trading option'. You may have to click away from the Trading Screen and then back again to get a friend you added recently to appear on your Friends List under 'New Private Trade'

To start trading with someone in your friend list, simply double click their name. As before, your cards will appear on the left of the trade screen, and things you will be receiving from your friend are on the right. To add cards to the trade, simply click 'Add' and select cards as described above. Note that when you click add on your friend's side of the trade, you will only be able to see cards in their Trade Binder - not their entire collection, so if you can't see any cards there, you might need to ask them to tag their cards for trade!

When you are happy with a trade, simply click 'Create Offer'. You can review any offers you have made by clicking 'My Trade Offers' - where you can also cancel any offers you have sent. As before, any cards offered in trades cannot be offered in other trades until the current trade has been accepted or declined.

Accepting Private Trades

When someone sends you a Private Trade, a small window will pop up to notify you. When this happens, go to the Trading Homepage and click 'Offers to Me'. Here you will be able to see every single Private Trade that has been sent to you.

To accept a trade, or to view it in more detail, double click it, and scroll up and down to view all the cards in that trade. If you are happy with the trade - simply click accept. Remember that you will need to scroll right down to the bottom of both sides of the trade if the accept button is greyed out - or you might just not have the cards the other person was trying to trade for.

You can right click a card at any time to view it in more detail, as well as to see how many copies of it you already have. Please note that that little number at the bottom of cards/packs in a trade corresponds to the number you currently have in your collection, not the number you are being offered.

Obtainable Free Cards

There are now a wide variety of ways to get free cards. Apart from Daily Reward Booster packs, it is possible to obtain the following:

1) Power Relay Deck: Type 'boundariescrossed' into the Redeem Codes section of the shop.

2) 45 Free Booster Packs: Earn 4 stars on every trainer in the Trainer Challenge.

3) 3 'Basic' Theme Decks: Win 7 times with any Basic Deck in the Trainer Challenge to unlock it

4) 5-Card Booster Packs: Cost 95 Trainer Tokens in the shop.

New Players are advised to complete all of the above to unlock useful cards. Some Trainers and Energy cards that can be obtained for free (and in which deck) are listed here:

Shop

The Shop allows you to Redeem Codes to unlock booster packs and buy Booster Packs with your Trainer Tokens. It's important to keep checking back here after new updates to see if anything new has been added to the shop.

You can access the shop homepage either by clicking 'Shop & Redeem' on the Home Menu Screen, or by clicking the bag icon from the Menu Bar.

Shop Contents

Cards

Under the Cards sub-menu it is possible to purchase Booster Packs and Theme Decks. Theme Decks cost 500 Trainer Tokens, and 5-Card Booster Packs cost 95 tokens. To purchase an item, simply select it, choose the quantity and click Redeem.

10-Card Booster Packs can only be redeemed using Booster Credits, which are no longer available since the system was changed in May 2013. See the 'Redeem Codes' section below for more information.

Other Shop Options

Many aspects of the shop, including Gameplay and Avatar Items are still under development and have not yet been released.

There is no confirmation when these updates are schedules for, so be sure to check Prof_Mathis' updates for more news.

Redeem Codes

To unlock additional (virtual) booster packs in the game you must enter codes found in Booster Packs that can be bought in real life. The current system means that these codes will unlock a virtual booster pack from the same set that the code came from - for example, a Dark Explorers code will unlock a Dark Explorers pack.

Codes cannot be redeemed more than once. After they have been used, the shop will return the message 'This Code has already been redeemed' meaning it is now unusable.

Just so you are aware - the old system that ended in May 2013 granted players 1 Booster Credit per code they entered - with which they could choose which virtual booster pack they wanted to unlock. This system has been retired due to many complications and is unlikely to return. Players with booster credits remaining have been told to use them up by January 2014.

Summary

Shop Contents:

 • Theme Decks @ 500 Trainer Tokens
 • 5-Card Boosters @ 95 Trainer Tokens
 • 10-Card Booster Packs @ 1 Booster Credit (no longer available)

Redeeming Codes

 • Codes to unlock extra virtual booster packs can be found in Booster Packs in real life.
 • Entering a Code will unlock a Booster Pack from which the code came from.
 • Codes cannot be redeemed more than once

Thank you

could've just opened 10 threads instead, probs would've been neater

It's more for people to have to search for - I think scrolling down 1 guide will be easier to read through. I hope this somewhat meants your expections?

Also, the 30 second delay also applies when posting new threads.

looks pretty wordy but at least its categorized nicely, will try to direct people to this place whenever possible

I think in the Cards section might be worthwhile giving a guide on how to identify locked cards

and then in the trading section maybe put a disclaimer to remind them that locked cards can't be traded, then direct them to Cards to find out what are locked cards. That is probably the most frequenstly asked question

either in the Chat/Trading/Terminology section probably could add in some of the terms used in here such as LF, FT, FA, SR

Good point - I will add that into the FAQ as soon as I start it (probably will be tomorrow now).

I know it's a bit wordy, but I wanted to fully explain things. For people who don't want to read - I have included summaries.

Thanks :)

I really want to expand to include things like secrets, tips and tricks - but I simply haven't got time today. I have another Helper Thread I want to complete tomorrow - so this will have to wait a bit now.

I'm now mainly waiting on Moderators to give me a list of things they want changed..

Ah AlexManectric for secrets, tips and tricks be sure to add some trainer challenge secretes like these one: Even someone player complete 100% trainer challenge if later play it again but with a theme deck who never win a opponent then this opponent exactly give 1 token if actually the player beat him with this deck theme!! Anyway trainer challenge have more secrets like overall wins (to bad no reward for 36/36 overall win) and more!!:)

Ah, awesome thread Alex! It's the best! I knew you would make a really great guide because I read your other two sticky guides and those were very helpful.

maybe for convenience you could put like a special mark on each chapter as well as the table of content. for example say if you labeled each chapter number with something like #1# then if I wanted to hop to chapter 1 I just have to cltrl+* for #1# rather than scroll may way there.

also maybe in terminology section you could put out some of the short hand used in the chat like SR, LF, FT, FA, BC, PB etc

The Titles and sub-titles in the contents page match the Titles further down in the thread - so you can search for those, AND you can already search #1, #4 etc because they appear as the numbers of my replies (the white numbers at the top right of every post). I did think that one through very carefully.

I like that idea, I'll add a long list to the FAQ - I want to keep the Terminology Section limited to terms I use in the thread, but I'll 100% add it to the FAQ :)
