Are HeartGold and SoulSilver cards now illegal?

In real life tournaments that run modified format, such as City Championships and State Championships, that is the case - only cards from Black & White onwards are allowed. Currently the PTCGO is in an unlimited format that allows all cards regardless of set. However a lot of competitive players have already switched to the new format online as well in order to practise for IRL tournaments, and they'd appreciate it if you did the same.

PTCGO will be adding the ability to play in different formats online eventually, but until then I'd recommend only using BW onwards cards in Player Vs Player (especially if playing in Expert), and keep the HGSS cards to play against Friends, unless you're willing to put up with a lot of competitive players raging :P.

Ugh... now I feel bad for not removing Twins from my decks...

Well, thanks for letting me know Yelsha.

No problem! If you don't have enough B/W cards to make a consistent deck though, don't let that deter you from using it if you need to. Just let your opponent know that that's the situation you're in ^^

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I mean when playing expert, it's best to try to use BW only (mostly cause they outclass the others), but considering the game gives you HGSS cards to start with.

I especially wouldn't worry about cards like switch. BW has the exact same card with different artwork.

I especially wouldn't worry about cards like switch. BW has the exact same card with different artwork so even the real competitive players would be stupid to complain about them.

This you should absolutely not worry about at all. Even in official tournaments, older prints of cards that were reprinted in current sets are always legal (note that this only applies to trainers and energy, since Pokémon have different attacks/etc. with each print).

My deck is mostly BW with HGSS switches and super scoop ups. Noone seems to mind those.

Hi all!

Yep! HGSS cards are currently legal as well as all other cards available. Any cards redeemed at this time are legal and available for play in the Pokémon TCG Online.

Some players may have their preferences and restrictions and this may be encouranged, but for now there is no official restriction. So far we want to make sure everyone can play together with the cards they want to use and have redeemed to their account.

I hope that helps alleviates any confusion!

Thanks!

Hey DJPlace!

There is no expectant date for if or when rotations will begin for cards. For now, just enjoy the versatility that the Unlimited format grants!

If by "versitility" you mean ridiculous (ly broken!) and useless matches for people trying to prepare for tournaments. If I play ONE more person who junk arms for a catcher, I swear.

Non-reprinted HGSS cards need to either be removed from all accounts and replaced with booster credits, or make an unlimted format room.. or every HGSS-on deck should not be able to be played in Expert. I'm sick of thinking i'm playing someone who is using a legit deck and they just slap down a PONT or a Junk Arm, and so is every other competitive player. Casual players should play in novice.
