Don't play expert, there's a novice mode for a reason, there's no shame to it.

Long version:

Okay guys, lets be honest here. If you have the basic theme decks and like 12 booster codes, you shouldn't be in Expert. EVER. I'm not trying to be mean here. You should play against other people with the same kind of decks in Noice, that's why its there. People like me, who've redeemed a couple hundred codes or more(in some cases MANY more) over the past year and a half or so are going to have better decks more experience, and want to play people at a comparable level. Facing Basic color decks or store bought theme decks or garbled mixes of these decks is not fun. In the past 2 hours I played 5 matches, only one was against a competive deck. The rest were basic colors and I slaughtered them usually without them taking a prize. It's boring.

Also More common sense here: if you don't have at least 20-30 minutes, don't play a match. If you have to leave in 10 minutes, go to youtube, or something else, don't get a match going and just bail. Its not fair to your opponent.

Short version:

If you have basic decks, stay out of Expert. If you don't have time to play, DON'T.

PS: Thank you to the admins for fixing Rescue scarf!!!

i have tons of cards and good decks and every time i play expert my opponent just quit after my first turn

mods need to put the bad decks in novice and good decks in expert instead of us picking

MODS hint hint it would help

No it wouldn't. They would have to recview every deck and decide if it is good or not, and half of them don't even know what 'good' is.

Yes, I agree. Theme decks are good for people starting out or learning. Maybe in the future the game will match you up automaticaly with people your level. That would be nice!

There are multiple reasons newbies generally flock to Expert:

- Lots of Expert players go to Novice for easy wins

- A reason I fall under: Lots of players have great decks, but still stand no chance vs top-tier decks faced in Expert. So, said players go to Novice in the hope of finding a good match there. Said players would much rather go into Intermediate or something as they're not in Novice to stomp, but unfortunately, that doesn't exist.

Both reasons account to that many more good players are in Novice, than there are in Expert. The obvious conclusion is that the chance to face an unbeatable opponent is higher in Novice, so they flock to Expert.

I disagree.

I play in Expert with free cards only, and I'm doing decently.

It just so happens that I've had 200+ combined hours of play logged on the TCG versions for the Game Boy, built and tested decks on the redshark program on pokebeach in previous formats, and watched lots of competitive level games commentated by the guys at Top Cut.

Experience is not measured by the cards you own.

.

It does help a LOT that I was able to unlock the trainer challenge decks a second time around; the extra 2 Oak, 2 Dual Ball, and Ninetales go a long way.

How do you do that?

I want another Ninetales...

It really annoys me too. I'd say about 30% of the matches I play in Expert are people who have simply modified a theme deck. It's extremely annoying when I see Basic Yellow in Expert.

If you're getting thrashed in most of your games, go and play Novice. It's there for a reason.

Hello all.

This argument of bad decks in expert and good decks in novice is old people.Give it a rest! If players want to be in either category then they should be allowed that choice.Trainers should play where they feel comfortable. This age old argument needs to be put to an end. But,as ive stated before more times then i care to count anymore;this argument isnt gonna go away. But,poeple should be allowed their choices good or bad and people need to except that for what it is.If you cant then dont battle in my oppinion.Allow people their choices as they would allow you your choices and leave it at that.If they have a fair deck or a bad deck nomatter what anyones oppinion is they have the choice of where they can use them. The reasons for these also have beenn discussed so many times i wont bother repeating them either. We should all just be here to have FUN!Not trying to stirr up the fire with needless banter.Their are issues here even i could unload with both barrels of the truth, however im leaving them alone for now!

So just let the sleeping lion alone for all our sakes and get back to whats the most important thing and Have Fun with the Chaos of BATTLE and Collecting the new cards.Everyone deserves that much.Weve gone to long without the thrill of battle or the hunt of the next win.And soon enough trading and chat will be back.Patience is the key here people, even though for some that may be hard after waiting so long just for this thus far.But itll haft to be none the less.

Later all and good luck in the battle zone aka-War Zone!

Its annoying when a guy brings out full EXS in a novice game.

Its annoying when a crap deck is used in Expert.

I could understand testing out yoru deck in novice 1-3 times to get a feel for it, if you win 2/3 go play on expert. If you lose 2/3 on expert, go fix your deck to make it more competitive.

I've found with my deck i made, That i can win 12/16 Expert games. I've only ran into 1 deck that completely destroyed mine being the new dragons with the really low retreat cost. It beat me twice in a row same guy. Other ones were just bad draws.

You know what the online game really needs to help organize this problem?

An intermediate level.

Novice could be for those with their starter decks

Expert can be for those who find enjoyment in having their well-crafted decks

And intermediate could be for that inbetween stage... those how have progessed beyond the starters.

Seems like a bloody obvious solution really...

The matching engine in this game needs to evolve quickly or most players will quickly get fed up with getting beaten by fancy decks every time they try to play. There needs to be multiple levels beyond 'novice' and 'expert', and there need to be enforced criteria for the matches.

For example, the engine should never match someone with 0 win / 0 loss and a basic yellow deck with anyone who has non-basic decks or a bunch of wins already

As it is now, truely new, novice players are going to be completely discouraged from online play because nearly every match is setup with absolutely no chance to compete.

As a new player, I am immensely frustrated with the way things are now. I'm doing what I can with my basic green, and sticking to Novice, but most of the time I'm going up against decks with full EX Reshirams or Mewtwos. It's damned impossible to have fun and instead of coming down to my skill and strategy, things boil down to entirely the luck of the draw. I have to hope my opponent doesn't get enough energy or draw power support cards to pull of their one-shotting attacks before I can whittle their inssanely high HP values down.

To reverse paraphrase the OP,. EXs shouldn't be allowed in Novice. Ever.

I know it's technically possible to win against an EX deck with basic, but it's not fun.

I would consider myself to have the same ability as any of the players running 'competitive decks' I just don't have the cards yet to build the decks I want (as I am sure is the case with 90% or more of the players online). Even after opening 300+ packs, without trade you don't have a fully competitive deck. The game is 'free', anyone who just started since this release only has Togechu to play unless they have opened a ton of packs or gotten theme decks. Anyone who wants to test out the game will have played Trainer Challenge, popped into the Novice room (which also has competitive decks) and popped into Expert room. I would say just by sheer number (those with Togechu compared to those with competitive decks) you are likely to get matched up with basic decks regardless where you play.

It will all get taken care of. The game is BETA and has only been out for a few weeks. Friends is up.

Go to Chat (three heads icon at top) in game, click on Friend tab, type the screen name of the person you want to add, and hit ENTER. They do the same on their end (you might have to accept request) and then you can Friend Battle against those few other players who do already have their competitive deck put together. If you have added someone by their screen name here in Pokegym but they aren't online you can also try to find players using 'BW on competitive decks' in the chat feature (lower left). Go to "Battle Challenge" and request matches. When someone responds challenge them via friend chat.

Trading will be up and when it does you will see a lot more people with various kinds of decks even if they are not all 'competitive'.

Formats will be added where you can ensure that you are only facing decks of the same type of format you want to play against.

The best thing we can all do is play for fun. Try to break the game in any ways possible and report back with Tickets to the PTCGO staff so they can continue and improve the game. I too anxiously await when it will be bug free and we will have access to all of the features which we are now laying the ground work for. Lets look for solutions instead of just complaining although I understand sometimes we need to vent our frustrations.
