Old Collector, New To TCGO

Hello everyone,

As the title says, I'm an old pokemon card collector, I have literally thousands of cards at my house in boxes, tins and other storage containers. I am new to the TCGO and I'm looking forward to being able to play next week when everything's back up and running again, but I'm in need of some help.

I've never really built my own decks, I've never entered a proper tournament because getting to them has always been difficult for me. All we used to do was battle with the premade decks you can buy in shops. So I'm sort of looking for pointers on deck building, which combinations of pokemon work well together and so on.

I have been watching videos on championship decks to get some ideas but I would like to make some of my own unique decks. So any help regarding set ups or any ideas for what I could do would be greatly apprieciated.

I would like to create a dragon deck of some kind, this is a sort of first for me. But things have changed so much now card-wise I don't know where to begin.

Well, first thing you do is buy some packs with codes. After that ,i would recommend you save at least 10 codes to trade with for playsets of cards which you will be using in your deck such as double colorless energy, switch, max potion etc.But before that you have got to get the pokemon you need.Dragon types and dragon pokemon will be featured in the newest set-Dragons exalted, but dark explorers is a good set too since it has much of the trainers which people will be after. So buy some Dragons exalted packs from the shop, open them and then build yourself a deck and then wait untill trading comes on so you can trade for the cards u need/want.

Some good cards to have in a deck:

-double colorless energy(playset=4) ,you can get 4 for 1 pack in trading

-pokemon catcher-1 for 2 packs

-Profesor Juniper-major draw card, dont know the price for these currently

-N-another useful draw card, unsure about the price

most of the other cards will form the basic of your deck, but you have to decide how you feel about those for yourself.

Thanks for your reply,

I've redeemed a few codes (around 15) for now, waiting on some more boosters to be delivered to my house for some more codes. I picked a few packs from the shop at random just to see what I get, I like a surprise. Also chose a few dark explorers, the rest I will probably use on dragon's exalted.

I also preordered the rayquaza/darkrai/mewtwo ex tins (doesn't get sent out til the end of next month though) but their promos will be a very useful addition

Also I can't open the boosters I bought online yet because of the online game being offline, so I'm looking forward to opening those next week.

All trainers other than fa n, catcher, candy, collector, and alth lithographs are 2 for a pack generally, I sell them at 3 for a pack

I don't really get the whole trading aspect online yet, it's alot different to physical trading, I'll have to look up a guide or something on card values and such

Also can someone tell me whether the booster packs/promos in the Arceus and Legendary beast tins come with codes?

  • 2 weeks later...

There are no codes in anything from card sets older than Black and White, but you can use codes to get virtual cards from Heart Gold Soul Silver to the most recent set. Arceus/Legendary Beast tins are from very old sets and do not have codes.
