Apologies for the delay in posting this Q&A. I've been unable to access the forums until about 20 minutes ago. As promised, here's answers to some of the questions that have been asked.

Why did the release schedule for the new version of the game change to late summer 2012?

Before beginning work on the new version of the game, we felt that only one aspect needed to be overhauled. However, as we started working with the new developer, it became clear that other areas of the game needed to be reworked as well. Rather than rush these important changes, we decided to give our new developer additional time to properly test and polish the game and its mechanics.

The silver lining to this scenario is that the new version of the game will be far more robust and easier to expand than it is currently. Also, players will see improved performance and better graphics, card bugs will be easier to track down, and patches will be distributed with greater ease and frequency.

Why are you disabling the multiplayer option in the current version of the game?

Disabling the existing multiplayer functionality was a difficult decision to make. However, we felt that leaving an unpolished, unsupported version of the multiplayer game online would not provide an ideal play experience for our community. We anticipate an upswing in new players when the updated version of the Trainer Challenge goes live in the coming weeks. Rather than provide these players with a poor multiplayer experience, we felt it best to focus on the new Trainer Challenge. This will provide new players a better opportunity to stay engaged in the Pokémon TCG Online over time.

We also do not want to neglect the current, loyal player base, and because we aren’t able to dedicate further resources to the old multiplayer game, we would have a continually deteriorating experience to which we could not respond in any other way than, “You’ll need to wait for the new version to get that fixed.” With fewer players filing in-game abuse reports, the moderator staff can dedicate more time to catching trade scammers, answering player questions on the forums, and testing the new version of the game.

In addition, our Operations Team is expending a good deal of time and effort on a daily basis working on the stability of the game. Disabling the multiplayer option greatly improves stability, leaving the team to focus on the upcoming transition.

When are you disabling the multiplayer option, and when will it return?

The multiplayer option will be disabled on the same day that the new version of the Trainer Challenge is available to the public. This is scheduled for mid- to late May. The multiplayer game will return when the new version of the game goes live, which is expected to happen at the end of the summer.

Will the new version of the game be Web-based or downloadable? What are the system requirements?

Starting with the new Trainer Challenge, the Pokémon TCG Online client will be a download. Moving away from a solely Web-based game allows us a lot more flexibility and delivers a better gameplay experience for our players.

The developers have indicated that the system requirements for the new version will remain similar to those for the old version. At this time, they are projecting the following:

j5iUC.jpg

Why won’t the Pokémon TCG: Black & White–Dark Explorers expansion be available in the current version of the game?

Adding a set to the current version of the game takes several weeks of coding and several more for bug testing. Every hour spent adding cards to the current game is an hour less spent working on the new game. Due to the nature of the current game engine, it is not possible to add the card images and text to the game without also adding the game logic. We felt that sacrificing the Black & White—Dark Explorers expansion was necessary to ensure a successful launch of the new Trainer Challenge and prevent further delays in the release of the new version of the multiplayer game.

What will happen to my card Collection when the new version of the multiplayer game is released?

We plan to migrate every player’s card Collection from the old version of the game to the new version on release.

What will happen to unspent booster credits when the new version of the multiplayer game is released?

A player’s unspent booster credits will remain available when the new version of the game is launched. Additionally, unused code cards will be valid in both the current and new versions of the game.

Will there be new chat and private messaging features in the new version of the game?

We will be discussing some of this new functionality in the next couple of weeks—keep your eyes peeled!

What happens to my older cards if Play! Pokémon rotates sets out of the Modified format in September?

All of your cards will remain in your Collection and you will still be able to play with them. The new version of the multiplayer game will eventually support multiple rules formats—meaning players will be able to search for Modified matches, Unlimited matches, and more!

Will there be a closed beta for the new version of multiplayer?

There are no plans for a closed beta.

Thanks for the update.

Lots of the good info that I was looking for.

I am sure that I will try the new trainer challange so anything that can make it interesting to do more then once will help me bid my time.

All positive and summer is not that long.

Although not doing DEX will mean twice as much stuff to debug and fix if it is release with the following set. Sets do come out every three months so catching up will not be fun. And I still do not understand show delaying DEX addition in Collection and trading hurts but if it does it does.

New Questions:

1) Will the new system allow for play on an iPad?

Good NEws, and what about Tabet App or Something? It's kind of hard to do things on non-internet explorer browsers....

Well, the important questions got answered, so do NOT take this as that I wanted different questions answered, but it still would've been nice if we could get a bit of information about the new Trainer Challenge as additional answers: a small list of a few new features would've been nice to get people excited to diminish the disappointment that online will soon be shut down for a while.

Anyway, great to see it will be a downloadable client, and Dark Explorers not being able to be coded in yet was expected as it indeed takes time, so absolutely no problem with that. However, I must say I can't agree with the reason of closing down Online though. I understand the reason, but a buggy game is still better than nothing at all. The exception is when the game's in development, but that's the case for V2, not the current V1.

And as for the stability: I never notice a single difference between "right before maintenance" and "right after mainenance": at most you could always let Online run until stability becomes a problem (something like "After X date we cannot guarantee stability as all our resources will be spent on developing V2. We decided to still let it run for the players who regardless of that like to battle each other" or something). I still feel just shutting it down will do more harm than good. Significantly so.

I understand your concern of focusing in the new version by closing down the buggy multiplayer. However, that is still the worst move you've ever made for an online game to lose its online ability.

Well, i don't mind that. Diablo 3 is coming out and i sure will be busy until next year so hope everything will turns out alright for you =).

(...) I still do not understand show delaying DEX addition in Collection and trading hurts but if it does it does.(...)

I would imagine that is because
Why won’t the Pokémon TCG: Black & White–Dark Explorers expansion be available in the current version of the game?

(...) Due to the nature of the current game engine, it is not possible to add the card images and text to the game without also adding the game logic. (...)

While I would think you could simply have some "do nothing" game logic, evidently this isn't the case.

If you anticipate stability to go kaput as soon as no one is there to maintain it, then it makes sense to not give us false hope that the multiplayer might survive through the summer. While I think there will be losses in the player base as a result of the removal, it seems the more honest option and I can respect that.

Pleased to see the old (PvP) will go out at the same time the new (TC) comes in. Hopefully there are new basic decks to use and it's more interesting than the previous Trainer Challenge.

Very glad to hear about the downloadable client. Other platforms would also be nice but they can probably wait until we have a (mostly) bug-free Windows/Mac version.

Multiple formats / rulesets (and searchability of such games) is something I've been hoping for for quite a while, so there's another thing checked off my TCGO wish list. Glad to hear there's no need to pawn off my Primes and other HGSS block goodies.

All in all good news. I know we've been promised things before that haven't come to pass, but I feel removing PvP is also removing any sugar-coating and saying to the players that it's serious now. (Because if PvP is taken away and isn't back shortly after Worlds for the set after Dark Explorers...things might get really bad.)

-Kooper, pleased that the last few sets have had quality Theme Decks (Furious Knights, Voltage Vortex, and both DEX ones should be good if usable), so that helps the Trainer Challenge.

Exactly as I suspected. Surely "less-than-ideal" is more ideal than "nothing at all".

Still a very unwise decision, in my opinion.

I'd rather have bugged multiplayer than no multiplayer, but I understand and I will wait for the game to come back up.

Will the forums still be up while the game is gone?

Honestly without DEX it doesn't matter much if multiplayer is up or down. I doubt many people would want to play an outdated, format even if they did leave it up. I still think the fact that the situation has been allowed to devolve to this point at all is a disaster. I'll stiack around to see what happens with version two, but only becuase I've already invested so much money here and kind of feel trapped.

My main concern now is compensation for the loyal players. As a few other people have stated, abandoning DEX, necessary or not, is discouraging. You said your focusing on the Trainer Challenge to get new players, but what are you doing to keep the old? In your response the implied answer was better communication on the forums and cracking down on trade scammers.

Ok that's great and all, but I question if that's really enough. Again, with no DEX who is really going to be trading? With no new cards or new format to test who is going to be asking questions? In my opinion the answers to both of these questions are new players, not old ones. I don't see any incentive for old players to stick with PTCGO in the coming months.

I'm afraid I'm coming off as entitled here, though that's not my intention. The thing is, you're asking all of us vets to swallow a pretty big, very bitter pill, and offering nothing to help it go down any easier. I still stand by my statement that DEX should be released for free to the public. Even a simple "help us test the new Trainer Challenge by playing 'x' amount of hours and earn 'y' amount of free booster credtis once DEX is released at the end of the summer (right before it become outdated thanks to the Dragon set) would be better than nothing. I would like to see a greater initiative to reward customer loyalty instead of essentially shrugging your shoulders and abandoning us with version one so you can try again with a new player base on version two.

Thank you for the update.

I am, honestly, heartbroken that DE will not be available online for so long. I've been looking forward to it for months :(. I basically stopped playing and trading altogether in anticipation of DE and was so excited about opening DE packs online next week, and trading again, until I read the news today.

However, I am, unlike seemingly everyone else here, glad that the Multiplayer option will be taken down until the new version comes online. I abandoned Multiplayer a while back, because I favor low-tier (but super fun) decks that would get obliterated by pro/glitch decks in Expert, but would roll over newbies in Novice, and I hardly ever enjoyed myself. I haven't been able to recommend the TCGO to anyone, because of both the Multiplayer setup problems (we can't have a friend battle!) and the number of terrible exploitable glitches. I absolutely would prefer a polished, functional Multiplayer to a glitchy, laggy, buggy one and will wait, somewhat impatiently, to get one. :)

I am heartened by the announcement of the new Trainer Challenge, but since DE won't really be a part of it, I'll be sitting tight, waiting for the new version... thanks again.

And the next step after that is a Full-Scale MMO...

Ya, I'm really looking foward to this, well, both of the ideas actually.

New question:

When the trainer challenge is released, will it be a brand new trainer challenge? Or will it be simply a copy of the old trainer challenge on the new engine?

Honestly i'm pretty happy about those answers. If multiplayer goes down for the short term to benifit the PTCGO in the long term, i don't see a problem with that.

My only issue you didn't address is if the new set isn't coming to us in this version will it be avaliable to us in the next one as soon as it goes live?

The developers have indicated that the system requirements for the new version will remain similar to those for the old version. At this time, they are projecting the following:

Operating System: Windows XP/Vista/7 or Mac OS X 10.5+

Processor: 2Ghz Intel or equivalent or higher processor

RAM: 2GB or higher

High-speed Internet connection

Will we be able to manipulate our collection when we're not connected to the internet? it'd be nice to be able to build decks on a plane flight or something similar.

I'm still very sad to see the multi-player go. it seems like quite a shame. Is thre any chance of an iPad version. That would more than make up for my disappointment.

I'm not going to lie I dont care about upgrades to the chat and quality in general of ptcgo. The only thing that annoys me is the bugs and glitches but even then I can get around them most of the time (not using some abilitys, cards, etc). But when you take away a big part of the game for the summer it very disappointing. Especially beacuse i just bought 50 code cards for dark explorers :(

Agreed. It is very frustrating because my friend and I spent about $200 this last month buying cards and codes and preparing decks going into the summer. I understand taking down the functionality for the refresh - but to remove the functionality for seemingly 4-5 months seems beyond reasonable. I wish that the people who are playing now were given the option to continue playing the current version of multi-player while the new players could not. I realize that is not nearly as simple of a task as it is to word it - but all the same. It feels unfair. I understand this is a beta and everyone is working towards a better product, which is great - but most of us are also paying customers and this is unfortunate and leaves a sour taste towards this platform.

I really hope they see our frustration. Please release dark explorers and keep the buggy MP for a little longer.

The wait will be disruptive to testing, but an improved version will be advantageous. I am hoping my existing codes (100 +) and existing card collection (over 15000 cards) stays in tact as indicated. Starting that over would be devistating. I look forward to the improved version of TCG.
