My school work has slowed to the point that I am able to return to Pokemon TCGO next week. Yay! I've missed you all so very much. As soon as I clear this last research paper, I am freed from my academic shackles for a little while.

I know this is the deck construction forum, so I'm also making this post about my upgrade of Dan's Steely Knives. That new promotional Solgaleo-GX fits like a glove, and works so well that I've fired Ultra Necrozma GX and Tapu Lele GX for this newest incarnation. I give you my new expanded deck that's able to weather the Celestial Storm and its dreaded Shrine of Punishment! Please do let me know what you think.

Looks pretty good although if you're going to play expanded, you're missing 4 Vs seeker and an ACE SPEC. Those are staples in the format.

I would remove the Pal pad, Gladion, Apricorn maker and 1 promo Solgaleo GX. Don't know what else, probably Oranguru. And add 4 vs seeker and 1 Ace Spec (Scramble switch if I had to choose out of the terrific Computer search or Dowsing machine).

And I would remove Lillie or a Brigette to insert a Rescue stretcher.

Think about Guzma instead of Lysandre. I prefer the second but for the strategy, the first could fit.

Other than that, the deck should work and seems nice. Unless you told us you miss the energy or you have problems setting up or... that's what I can point. If any suggestion fits your playstyle try it, and let us know! :D

Thanks for the reply.

I did make a couple of alterations. I realized the Altar of the Sunne didn't really help my chances against fire type decks, so I axed them in favor of adding a third Lysandre and Field Blower.

I used to run a deck with four VS seeker, but I ran into a snag 50% of the time where I would open with multiple VS seeker and no draw support. Kind of hard to use VS seeker if your discard pile is empty.

As for rescue stretcher, I don't see a need for it as long as I have Karen.

I'm not dumping Gladion in case one of my essential cards get bottled up in my prizes (I use him in every game).

I can't get rid of Apricorn Maker because he guarantees me Ultra Balls when I need them and he surfaces.

The Oranguru stays because he is a draw support and a much more needed work around for the world famous Alolan Ninetales and/or Hoopa stall wall.

My lone Pal Pad is used to bring back Cynthia into my deck (or Lysandre) as needed. It's also a card I can dump easily to get below the threshold of six (for Dialga GX) or three (for Oranguru) needed to use my draw support attack or ability.

The lone Lillie is there to help me draw out my deck a smidge faster. Hope springs eternal that she ends up in my opening hand.

I'll likely add in a Computer Search when I can afford it though.

My deck isn't perfect, but the draw support helps me get set up I'd say about 85 - 90% of the time. It's just a matter of finding Brigette and Alolan Vulpix or Brigette and Apricorn Maker.

My energy flow is usually fine thanks to Sol Burst and Turbo Strike/Geotech System or Radiant Star.

With all that said, here's my updated deck list:

Pokémon - 18

* 1 Oranguru SUM 113
* 2 Beldum GRI 83
* 1 Dialga-GX FLI 82
* 1 Solgaleo {*} UPR 89
* 1 Metang GRI 84
* 2 Metagross-GX GRI 85
* 2 Solgaleo-GX PR-SM SM104
* 2 Solgaleo-GX SUM 89
* 4 Cosmog SUM 64
* 1 Cosmoem SUM 65
* 1 Alolan Vulpix GRI 21

Trainer Cards - 32

* 1 Pal Pad UPR 132
* 4 Rare Candy SUM 129
* 1 Gladion CIN 95
* 3 Lysandre AOR 78
* 1 Tate & Liza CES 148
* 1 Karen PR-XY XY177

I took one piece of your advice and added a Computer Search. I'm sure that will increase my chances of pulling out a rare candy when I need it. People are making loads of bad trades trying to get their hands on Lost Thunder packs. I don't know what's especially appealing about this expansion over the last one, but I was able to snag a Computer Search, FA Tate & Liza, and two FA Brigette for dirt cheap. I'm cutting bait there before this insane market goes Bewear. Get it? Like a bear market but with a Pokemon bear instead? Tough crowd. Without further ado, here's my updated deck list:

     Dan's Steely Knives

* 1 Oranguru SUM 113
* 2 Beldum GRI 83
* 1 Dialga-GX FLI 82
* 1 Solgaleo {*} UPR 89
* 1 Metang GRI 84
* 2 Metagross-GX GRI 85
* 2 Solgaleo-GX PR-SM SM104
* 2 Solgaleo-GX SUM 89
* 4 Cosmog SUM 64
* 1 Cosmoem SUM 65
* 1 Alolan Vulpix GRI 21

Trainer Cards - 32

* 1 Tate & Liza CES 166
* 1 Pal Pad UPR 132
* 4 Rare Candy SUM 129
* 1 Gladion CIN 95
* 2 Lysandre AOR 78
* 1 Karen PR-XY XY177
* 1 Apricorn Maker CES 124
* 4 Cynthia UPR 119

There's always a bit of a craze when a new expansion drops.  Everyone wants to get the new cards- especially the meta-changing ones- as soon as possible.  Which means if you're lucky (or prudent) enough to have some codes for the new pack, you can up-trade them like crazy from what their value will eventually settle to. :)

As for the deck: are you sure you need four cosmog?  4 Solgaleo is obviously necessary to have a duplicate of each version, but I think you're unlikely to get out four full evolutions in a game.  Then again, depending on your strategy you might want three, so having the extra one for consistency would be a plus. (le shrug.) I also notice you don't have my buddy Colress.  Well, let me just say this: your bench is filling up and fast.  If your opponent puts just two pokemon on their bench, you've got yourself a supporter that's stronger than Cynthia.  Colress may not be much accoladed, but I believe he's one of the strongest supporters in Expanded. ------- Vs Seeker is pretty much objectively better than Pal Pad, so I'd suggest swapping that.  And I understand the frustration of having it at the start.  But as long as your support count doesn't go too low as a result, it's the consensus that 3-4 of it is hugely beneficial. ------ Do you get by with 8 metal?  This is a deck that uses a lot of energy, so you may need more.  Depends of if you've ran into any problems, of course. ------- Consider Heavy Ball.  It only gets you evolutions and Dialga, but it's free.  And since you have Brigette, you probably don't need much help with the basics. ------- I don't know how much you use it, but I run a full four max potion in my Metagross deck.  I think the real power of the build lies not in its ability to hit hard, or its extreme flexibility and energy recycle, but in its exquisite power to simply never get knocked out.

This deck is, of course, very tight on space.  Would you agree that any card that doesn't regularly pull its weight should be immediately replaced?

And good luck. :)

The truth waits for no one.  That which you refuse to see, TPCi, slips past you.  The chat function was never your problem, yet through your blindness, you have made it one.

Well, it happened. I entered my new deck into its first expanded tournament today and... I won. This is the very first tournament winning deck that I've made. I don't want to sound like some overconfident **** who gloats, but I've started this game in 2016 and I feel like I've come a long way. Maybe I got lucky, but I think I've built something special here, because I outlasted both a Night March and a Vespiqueen deck. I was only able to Karen in my Vespiqueen match, and what a squeaker that was. We were both down to two prize cards and he conceded because he couldn't pull his Battle Compressors out of discard.

Thank you both for the replies. I have tried Colress, but I find he's a bit of a risk because if you draw him too early and really need cards... I'd rather have Cynthia for consistency to be honest. I do get by with eight metal energy, because I'm able to pull energy out of discard with three Pokemon to set up my attacker.

As beloved as VS Seeker is (I have four of them and have used them in past decks) I'd prefer to stick with consistency and keep my Pal Pad, thank you very much. I've never gotten draw stuck because of a Pal Pad, but I certainly have with two or three Versus Seeker at once that I couldn't even use or get rid of.

As for why I prefer Ultra Ball over Heavy Ball, it's because I can use the former to discard energies that happen to be in my hand for later use. Heavy Ball doesn't allow me to discard anything, so it doesn't quite have the deck thinner utility that I need.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! <3

I've made a slight tweak to my deck that will help my access to the big GX Pokemon. The change I've made is replacing Apricorn Maker with Olivia. The thought process is that I can now use Ultra Ball to pull a stage one, my Solgaleo (*), or Oranguru without fear of mucking up the top layer of my cake, so to speak. I need to play at least two dozen more matches to collect enough data to tell me if the change was effective. My only concern is that getting rid of Apricorn Maker reduces my access to Ultra Ball, which I also use as a deck thinner. This might make Oranguru's Instruct ability harder to use, seeing as how there might be scenarios where I have trouble dumping my hand. We'll see how this unfolds. But I'm through typing. Until next time people!
