Hey guys,

I last played around the time when Greeninja was still a thing and would like to come back.
I never really enjoyed standard that much and mostly grinded ladder with theme decks or Expanded (my preferred format)

I have a question about the expanded decks I still have and would like to know if they are still viable to play in expanded or if I'd get my *** handed constantly.

And if so, which one is the most potent in the current Meta of those listed?

If none of them really are, any way to make some of them viable maybe via new cards (I'd welcome any tips in that regard).

Those are some pretty decent decks. Those were good about 3 years ago.

Greninja is actually still a thing.

I think you should look up good current decks in expanded on the web. There are a lot of good deck lists people come up with.
Try try again. Never ever quit.

First, thanks for your fast reply.

I am aware that those were good around the time I last played, I specifically build them because of that:D

I also know that I could just build an entirely new deck but my intention with this thread was to find out if I could either a) still play any of those decks in the current expanded format or, if not b ) modify them to make them viable again.

I don't want to shell out a bunch of money again for an entirely new deck of cards I all don't own if I could maybe just add some to the current decks I have to make them competetive.

Id say Ray is worse now... Zoroark makes most people play a decent number of Parallel Cities and Garbodor did the same for Field Blower, so... You should at least consider that.

Going down the list:

M-Ray + Raichu:

M-Ray is somewhat viable in the current meta, however he is simply outclassed by Zoroark GX. Even though the later deals less damage, being able to attack with just DCE and not having to rely on Mega Turbo + Spirit link, on top of an insane ability, has simply eradicated any need to play M-Ray.

A problem you'll likely face is that the hate which is dedicated against Zoroark will hurt you even more, as M-Ray was never good at recovering from a negative position.

I'd personally try out Raichu + Bats if you got the cards, or maybe Metal Ray, basically any M-Ray form that doesn't rely on a secondary attacker which also requires a full bench to be effective.

Yveltal + X

Yveltal will probably always be my favourite midrange Pokemon and quite frankly it was arguably the most odminant Pokemon ever since it was printed until the release of  Guardians Rising.

Yveltal+Zoroark+Gallade wasn't called the best deck for nothing.

Sadly as of right now Yveltal simply lacks the damage to compete. I've been trying to draft a decent “new age” version of good old caw blade and if I got more time on my hands I'll test more, but to be honest you won't get over the damage issue.

Archie's Blastoise

Another favourite deck of mine. The recent ban of Puzzle of Time has hurt the archetype, yet you can still do some serious damage with it.

This is the version I played until the ban:

Spoiler

Some notes: Tapu Fini to 1 shot benched Shaymin EX and to threaten a KO on any damaged Pokemon. Wishiwashi GX to OHKO even 250 HP Pokemon. Lapras GX as a reliable attacker that doesn't require as many energy as Keldeo.

M-Mewtwo

Mewtwo suffers from the same fate as M-Ray: The deck is simply outclassed by better options nowadays.

The shadows of the abyss are like the petals of a monstrous flower that shall blossom within the skull and expand the mind beyond what any man can bear, but whether it decays under the earth or above on green fields, or out to sea or in the very air, all shall come to revelation, and to revel, in the knowledge of the strangling fruit - and the hand of the sinner shall rejoice, for there is no sin in shadow or in light that the seeds of the dead cannot forgive...

Thank you Felidae for your extensive analysis of my decks. It makes me sad that 2 of my favourite decks are not viable anymore due to power creep but I guess this is what happens after 2 years:P

I guess Archies is my best shot then out of the stuff I have.

One last question, would you think Turbo Darkrai is viable?

I found the variant of Chris Siakala on pokegoldfish (can't link it since the forum seems to censor links)

This wouldn't break my bank (compared to making a whole new deck with a lot of cards I don't have) so I'd like to know how it fares in the current Meta.

Thank you.

One last question, would you think Turbo Darkrai is viable?

Turbo Darkrai is still a "beast" -- if you don't come up against Fighting weakness.  It hasn't seen much play in real-world tournaments because Buzzwole is one of the top meta decks (both the "baby" Buzzwole and the GX versions).  They're often paired with Lycanroc-GX, which switches you out when they evolve (like Lysandre), so they can nail the one with most of your Energy.

Don't get me wrong.  It's a good deck.  You should try it on the VS Ladder and see for yourself.

Yeah,

totally understandable. Thankfully on ladder it doesn't matter much because I can just concede and go to the next match. Then I will build it and see in how much fighting decks I run into.
